VIN check
« on: March 25, 2020, 08:49:38 AM »
Good day all,
Forgive me if this has been asked before but what is the best way to do a VIN check on a bike you’re interested in buying? Thanks for any help.

Dont know where you are located but could start with your local Police Dept?

These bikes dont have the modern 17 digit VIN, so internet checks wont work.

For what reason do you want it checked

If your in Canada a UVIP with do all that searching for you and costs $20.00. Shows all previous owners and any liens outstanding on the bike. Your insurance company up here can also do a VIN check on the bike to verify if it is correct or altered from the original numbers too.
Common sense.....isn't so common!

Sorry, I should have been more elaborate. The bike is newer (2003 RC51) . I found it on the internet and I am trying to do as much due diligence as possible. Any advice would be greatly appreciated and accepted.
I suppose the question doesn’t really belong here but I know that I will get solid advice from the members here.

In UK we have a hpi check which cost about £30 and shows if its on finance or an insurance write off, i am sure there is something similar in US or try a freindly dealer and offer to pay the cost

A VIN check can also be done to find out if the bike is reported as stolen.

1973 CB750K3 - Candy Bacchus Olive or Sunflake Orange

Yeah , the bike is out of state. I have seen pics and video of it and it looks really nice. I want to do the VIN check to see if it has been stolen, salvage, etc. Just wondering if anyone can recommend a site that maybe they have had good luck with.

You should be able to call the DMV License and Theft division and give them the VIN. They will look it up and tell you if it is clear (not stolen, salvage, lien, etc). So long as the title is clear and you have a bill of sale and the sellers information there shouldn't be an issue getting the title. That's what I did here in NC to get my bike that didn't have a title. Then I just followed all the steps they outline and I have my title free and clear.

We have free register to check in Sweden on Internet. Just enter the plate number. Number of owners, when registered etc

If sending an SMS, more information will be sent with previous owners names. No costs.

That would be nice but now in Texas, the plate stays with the owner and not the bike [or car]

OK, so one vehicle has had as many plates as owners then?

This reminds me about Shanghai, China where I heard that a reg plate cost a lot.

Not necessarily, as they changed this just a few years ago.

BTW - I register my bikes as antiques and use an old plate from the year of manufacture.
They are easy to find on ebay...

My both CB750s have had same number since rhey first got it, 1975 and 1976.
New plates with same numbers  when needed. A fresh restore everything repainted and polished need a new shiny plate.
