I had a red '70 Kaw 500 back in late 1970 through early June '73 when I bought my K3. There were several things I remember allot about the H1. It was probably one of the most fun street bikes I ever had. The "whooooooooooooooop" sound it made as you were hard on the gas passing someone was unnerving and awesome, to anyone in my sights. Front wheel climbing sky ward with that unmistakable sound as you leaned forward into the bars to hold her down. It was quicker than my buddies Honda K1 and another buddies K2. But, the Honda's were just a little faster. Not by allot, but they were faster. When I was showing an indicated 118 they would just slowly walk past me, with the K1 being about 3-5 mph faster than the K2. I would guess the K2 was about 3-5 mph faster than the H1. For me another thing about the Kaw H1, was reliability. I either had a lemon or bad luck. In the time I had it, it rattled up 3 sets of pistons, all the CDI boxes "A", "B" and "C" went bad. The clutch had a nylon like screw that when the clutch cable was pulled this would screw in pushing on the clutch rod disengaging the clutch. It went bad and cocked in it's steel housing about 150 miles from home. That was the last straw for me. I fixed the bike, sold it and on June 9, 1973 I bought the K3 I still own. The poor soul who bought that H1 twisted the crank 2 weeks after I sold it. I have never had any problems with the K3(which was my first of many great Honda's), but I swore (often) and kept my promise, that I would never own another Kaw.
