cb750 - oil cooler options / install questions
« on: March 07, 2020, 11:12:46 AM »
I did some searching on the forum but I'm still confused.

I live in Los Angeles, and during the summer with traffic, your engine can get hot! I'd like to have the extra insurance of an oil cooler.
What are my options?

It looks like cycleX sells an adaptor where I would then have to find a cooler and fabricate mounting options:
http://www.cyclexchange.net/Oil%20System%20Comp%20Page.htm

I found this kit from d-mengineering: http://www.d-mengineering.co.uk/newshop/displayproduct.php?product_id=313&category_id=6#
Looks like a complete kit but would have to figure out mounting options. anyone have experience with this kit?

I found a NOS oil cooler kit made for cb750s back in the day by thermo-chem. It looks like a complete kit but is pricey. would this be the best option?

Lastly I see yamiya has a finned cooler that simply looks like it adds extra cooling fins: https://www.yamiya750.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=2291 - does this actually work?

I'm running:
1975 CB750F

836cc wiseco kit
Stage 4 ported head by mReick
Webcam 41
Lightened and balanced rotor, crank, hub, race cut gears, etc.

I'll have a more open breathing airbox (not pods but not the stock airbox)
I'll also have a performance exhaust

Make sure to use a good motorcycle oil that keep the viscosity and oil pressure when hot.

We had a really warm summer 2018, over 30C everyday so I gave my K6 a semi change of 2 bottles 20W-60 synth to keep oil pressure up. It helped. Oil pressure gauge looked happier ;)
Oil temp in tank was often  110-120C (230-248F)

The oil before was not bad, 20W-50 synthetic that withstand high temp.

Edit: I read that thread. I had ideas to mount an oil cooler. I have a new Setrab cooler on the shelf not yet installed.
I planned to use a termostat to ensure quicker warm-up too min 100C so condense water can evapourate from engine and the oil. Maybe 105C (220F) until oil cooler is connected.

I like this company  http://www.setrabusa.com/index.html

Thanks Mike. These look nice, they even have small fanpacks, hhhmmmmm...

So essentially get a cooler from here, and use an adaptor like cycleX or similar and weld on some mounting tabs?

Those old tube/fin coolers are good for automatic transmissions in cars (maybe) Matt. I used Earl's units for years but they aren't what they used to be. Thermostats are nice but let the bike ( i.e. oil) get hot before you beat the bag out of it and you'll be fine.

I like the Lockhart 700 that you can run real braided line fittings into . Only bad thinking is on the bottom.
I think they were designed for Kawi to eliminate the silly oil lines across  thee cylinder fins people do that looks #$%*ty. With the 700 you can go up over the top.

I managed to get my hands on a lockhart oil cooler adaptor from another member. I'll be using a slim line Setrab cooler.

Question for those who have used one of the Lockhart adapters. What oil filter bolt should I use? I know I need a longer one. Is the bolt from an F2/F3 long enough?
