Engine bolts - Sir Spillane still active?
« on: March 18, 2020, 07:15:34 AM »
Dear CB-enthusiasts,

I am working on a complete engine rebuild of my CB750-K7 engine.
I will have the engine cases wedblasted so they will look like new once they are finished.

Therefore I am looking for a new set of engine bolts.
After some investigation I think James Spillane offers a set which has the best value for money:
https://screwsforcycles.wordpress.com/

However the e-mail address on the website seems te be in-active and also the last posts are from 2014.
Does anybody know if James is still active or does somebody know of a good alternative?

All the best,
Daniël

Thanks for your answer MauiK3!
Alloyboltz.com looks like a good alternative

If anybody knows if James Spillane is still active I would like to know.
His set looks more economical and he offers the original cross-head.

All the best,
Daniël

If you aren't doing a show bike where originality matters, the allen head bolts are (in my opinion) better since they won't strip out as easily.

I got one kit out of Germany for cheap. Can't think of his name though. eBay and direct. I also got a set of swingarm bronze bushings from him for cheap.

Think this was the guy. Also goes by KenoshaKid

I chucked them in my DeWalt drill and spun them against my buffing wheel to polish to a chrome like finish

So I searched Ebay for some good alternatives and stumbled uppon this set:
https://www.ebay.nl/itm/264138200065?_trksid=p2380057.m570.l6004&_trkparms=gh1g%3DI264138200065.N41.S1.typeITEM_SHIPPED.R1.TR1#rpdCntId

It seemed great value at first.
I expected a full bolt set for the engine and some additional bolts for the frame (which I intend to do as well later on)

Now that I received the bolts it seems to be just some regular M8 M6 and M5 bolts wich has no link with the engine what so ever...
Maybe I will try to go with your suggestion Jerry, but it is getting a bit expensive in this manner  :-\

A well, my own fault should not be so stuburn..

Here a pic of the bolts for people who are also looking for a set, do not buy this set I would say...

Sorry to hear that, I was also really skeptical when going to buy my bolts because I knew people would cut corners or try and throw together packages that have "compatibility" across models or years..

Anyways I got mine from Ally Bolts because they sell them in packages, for example

Crankscase Upper
Crankcase Lower
Side Covers
Top End

All screws are packaged individually for their purpose and labeled too. I even got a wrong bolt and emailed them and they mailed me the correct one next day.

Finally the most important part is that they really understand the engines and know what screws are needed, not just looking at a fiche and then rounding all bolt sizes down to the next generic size. Most Honda bolts seems are ending in an even number MM length whereas generics only come in 5mm increments.

Hi Jakec,

Thank you for sharing your feedback about alloyboltz, I was just looking at their website (MauiK3 also proposed them earlier).
But your comment pulled me over the edge!

I rather spend a buck extra to know that I am using the correct materials.

I also need to say that the seller on Ebay was pretty cool about the matter and he offered me a refund which is great!
However his advertisement is still miss leading if you ask me.

I will finnish up my order at Alloy boltz, and let you know the end result of my bolt search ;)
