1980 cb650 vs cb650sc
« on: March 20, 2020, 10:54:20 AM »
I've acquired a 1980 cb650 that has been modified into a sort of street tracker/cafe. I am not sure if is a standard or custom. I need to get into the carbs but unsure if carbs different for standard vs custom for getting rebuild kits. if different, how do I tell which I have? thanks

 This is just basic info
This may not mean anything if the parts were all changed out from a donor bike. You could check engine numbers  for the year of engine and look on the carbs for identification of what is really on your machine.
A few Honda 500's, a few Honda 550's, a few Honda 650's, '72 cb 450, a couple 500/550/650 hybrids, and 2001 750.

The carbs have a number stamped into the bracket that holds them together, usually on the right (throttle) side. It maight also be on the carb body on teh #4 carb (again the right most carb).

Once you know that you can get the proper gasket set. Generally speaking if you have the factory needles and jets I would not replace them with any that might come with the carb kits as the aftermarket jets/needles often aren't the size and taper that they say they are.

Also, you should just post questions like these to the regular SOHC4 bikes board. The Open Topic board is generally for non-motorcycle related stuff and you will get more responses from the proper board. You don't need to start a new thread there for this, one of the moderators will move it for you soon.

the engine and carbs on a 650 are the same between the standard and custom. Its the frame and stuff that's different.
If youre worried about it being a bastard, look at the carbs themselves. 79-80 had mechanical slide carbs. 81-82 had vacuum CV carbs. They are visually very different and easy to identify. if you have mechanical slide carbs, there is a chance that 750 PD carbs were swapped on. I believe 650 PD slide carbs are labeled PD52? but don't quote me on that.

Also a 650sc is an 82-85 nighthawk. I'm assuming youre asking about a 650 and a 650c. 82 still had the SOHC 650 motor.

mine is a 1980 with mechanical slides, so sounds like I got my answer, the bowls are same on standard and sc. I will also check numbers. thanks for all the replies.
