soooo....my job got deemed "essential services" or whatever...i don't know if I am happy or pissed as most others in the company get to stay home with pay...only thing is, my guess is the "with pay" part is gonna change real soon.

How has mine changed? I've become even more disgusted with Colorado politicians. And just when I thought they couldn't be much worse, they dug a deep pit and put the 'bar' down in the bottom of that hole.   >:(

Yup- got the soft "Stay At Home" order from the governor here in Michigan today.  Non-essential businesses closed, etc.

Thing is, Lowes is an "essential" business, and will pretty much stay running in some capacity no matter what (yeah, even National Emergencies, natural disasters, etc.).  We've cut store hours a bit at the end of the day, but employee hours are unchanged.  Even if the physical store DOES close, my job can be done without it having to be open.  So it's still business as usual for me.

A bit miffed I'm not getting time off, but unlike a lot of people, I'm still pulling a steady paycheck, so I'm glad for that.  Apart from that, I've done some manner of "Social Distancing" my whole life, so none of this is really any different.

I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

When I was in college (the 1960s and 1970s) our 'social distancing' was a baseball bat (or pistol) carried with you. Now they want 6 feet between people! I'm not sure the USA is that big? Time to go live near Terry... :D

Being fully retired for the last two years, I have or had become the neighborhood handyman. With this virus thing and the 6 feet of “social distance”, not only has the work dried up for now, some neighbors won’t answer the front door, they talk through a window.
It’s like we’ll soon need a self adjusting personal digital distance gadget worn around our necks which sounds off when someone’s closer than the “prescribed social distance” mandated by the state or federal gubment.

Hey Mike,
I've got a fence I need rebuilding and my handy man's gone missing.
You can come over and do it if you like.
I promise I'll answer the door. ;D

If it were possible I would!
It would be great to meet some of you forum members over there. Can you hang on for a little bit longer?

I saw the report that the virus lived in a cruise ship over 14 days after people left and I remembered a book I bought from Washington. I opened it, peeled the vinyl cover tossed the wrappers and washed my hands. Was that enough to be safe? Now I see post office workers are getting it, and my union health insurance office stopped opening paper forms in the mail after an employee was required to be quarantined.
Just an FYI. I ain't skeered, yet, except of stupid people.

Nah, I wouldn't be worried Don, most of these viruses are passed from person to person, and can't survive on books, parcels, etc. I've had parcels from Oz, the US, and China in the last few weeks, and I'm fine. cough, cough, cough, burp, fart. ;D

Up at a ridiculous hour to go food shopping! Local chains are open at 7:00 am and the first hour is for. “seniors” (when the hell did that happen?). Supposedly that’s when the store is the most virus free, so off we go....... fact is, I need milk for my coffee the boss is convinced we’ll live longer if we eat vegetables.

Canada is getting pretty serious, we’r headed for total lock down soon. Fortunately between us and the couple/farm next door, we share 100 acres/person to maintain “physical distancing”. Be safe, stay well.

We ordered our groceries online and have curb service set up this morning. I still got the 7 cent per gallon gas discount, be sure to clean your hands after getting gas too.

I used a paper towel to hold the pump handle, guess I am getting paranoid?!  Gas down to $1.49.

"Shelter in place" goes into effect tonight at midnight, guess I'll just stay home.

And just want you guys to know:

We started distancing early in upstate NY.
We had many counties with no virus cases and were hoping this would be over soon. Then the feds called Americans home from overseas.
Kennedy airport just let the new arrivals get off the plane and led them to luggage ...then sent them home without as much as taking temperatures . WTF , so the spread continued. Now, after a few weeks of hiding out in our homes away from other people,  people from NYC are coming up the thruway to hide out in their country homes , purchasing supplies  in our local " clean"stores, seeing our clean doctors, using our clean hospitals, bringing the virus to us instead of leaving it downstate when all the help and federal dollars  are only going downstate.
This means we have to be in our homes for another 2 weeks as  new outbreaks have popped up in otherwise clean counties . This will go by allot faster if people would stay home and not travel and infect "clean " areas. I don't like the idea of  national guard soldiers limiting our movements locally, but I am liking the idea  of" no travel zones in or out" from infected areas such as NYC and  other infected areas to clean areas. We all want this to be over but, if this movement is allowed to continue it'll take that much longer to be over and more folks are gonna die. No one wants martial law, but that's what it'll be if we can't  be trusted do it ourselves. I hope we can do it ourselves.

Yeah and speaking of movement, although retired from the elevator trade for two years, I still get emails from the union with regards to notifications the working tradesmen need to know. Well, the latest email was that “furlough” is the word of the week, or month or....? Starting with new apprentices...gone...then moving up the chain, hours either cut, or days. Less than 40 hours or less than 5 days. I think some here have expressed that same reduction in hours or days.
I wouldn’t be surprised if next, the feds take ALL private/gov pensions, solvent or struggling and puttem in a big ol pot. So everyone who gets a pension will get 10 cents on the dollar, but more people will get a measly pittance of what they actually earned.
I think the “Tell us what really pisses you off” threads are gonna explode here soon.

Here in New Zealand we have gone in to national lock down mode as of tonight for a 4 week period. This is to severely limit the spread of the virus which at the moment is not rampant.
Our Government has provided wage subsidies to all employers, so that combined with a top up by my employer gives me an 80% salary and I can also top this up further to 100% by using my holiday entitlement.
So this means I'll have to self-isolate in the garage and work on my two CB750 projects for the next 4 weeks and get paid for it !

that's awesome. it was easy to transition to work from home in my field so the show must go on. just be careful and try not to get sick and end up spending the whole time in bed.

I'm hoping I can finish my project during this time as well. Now that I can't go to the bar 5 nights a week I should theoretically have the time..

Interesting times for sure.
The country wide lock down has neatly coincided with my departure from one essential service provider to another.
I have been made redundant from my 3 waters asset data management role after a restructure recently.
After a bit of pondering about life the universe and everything, I decided after nearly 20 years of doing data stuff and only 3 years to a Gold Card I needed to do something fun and low stress.
That’s how I found myself getting a Postie Job. Delivering Mail and riding a 110 Honda Super Cub.
Start tomorrow, Day 1 of lock down. I hope the dogs and Zombies are friendly

The wife is working from home with 2 teens and a 20 year old who's employer has closed for the duration.
