I was just watching the news and folks like me under lockdown in Melbourne, from midnight on Wednesday, must wear a mask when out in public. I don't mind, I don't want to get CV and I know that if I do, I might not survive. There will be big fines for those folks who refuse to wear one, but there are exceptions.

You don't have to wear a mask in the bank (Hmmnn, I'll stay away from banks then) and if you're going for a run, you don't need to wear a mask until you stop, so if I forget my mask and the face mask police start paying me some attention, I'll start jogging. If you work in a call centre, you don't have to wear one either, but I thought all the call centres were in India and the Philippines anyway, so that shouldn't affect too many folks here. It is getting scary though, not scary like in the US or Europe etc, but scary enough to make me feel comfortable staying home. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Thanks Dave!
I know how hard it is to get citizenship down there. Heard from other Swedish guys that has moved.
Maybe I can ask for asylum? :D

Quickly move to Hong Kong Per. Our Prime Minister (Scomo the magnificent) has offered asylum to anyone with a gripe against the Communist Party just to piss the Commies off, so you can get a fast tracked permanent residence visa if you go to the Australian embassy in Hong Kong and say, "G'day mate, these CV spreading commies are pissing me off, have you got room for one more God fearing taxpayer?" Mention Dave or me if you like, we'll put in a good word for you. ;D

Renouncing your US citizenship to become a citizen of another country is quite expensive as the government taxes you for all your assets and then projects it forward for several years ahead as well. So, I don't know how one affords to do something like that. Getting into Australia to live there is quite a challenge from what I discovered several years ago and retiring to AU is even more difficult.  They were only willing to allow you to move and work there if you had skillsets they desired/needed.
Not quite like America where people illegally immigrate and then the country supports them with housing and welfare in some cases. I can understand political asylum and religious related asylum cases. I understand also the American dream of being able to work hard and make something of yourself and have a decent life which quite honestly isn't possible in many of the countries the illegal immigrants are coming from...
Doesn't makee happy about illegal immigrants though.

I want a house with sea and some mountain view. A garage for a bike or 2.
Not a chance, I have wrong look,  "normal" in any ways. I'm part of the crowd that has to work and pay the bills.

I heard before that you must work as long as you do not take a job an aussie can do. Special skills guy.
Open a Judge Dredd group that make life safe for working taxpaying citizens with families should be a welcomed profession and business, right?

Yeah mate, I noticed our Prime Minister (Scomo, the potato head) was inviting Hong Kong "Entrepreneurs, business owners, industrialists" etc, so when you go to Hong Kong's Aussie embassy, tell them that you're a rich industrialist wanting to open a business employing lots of Aussies, and you'll get the VIP treatment. You could always open a massage parlor? They're always a money spinner? ;D

https://justthenews.com/politics-policy/coronavirus/holdhow-covid-19-fatality-reports-are-distorting-data

This is pretty misleading.

First, "Just the News" is published by John Solomon, who was fired from the Washington Times -- a mouthpiece of Republican admnistrations -- for inserting advertiser copy directly into stories. He has a long history of shilling for the current administration, and of "manufacturing scandals" and pushing fake conspiracy theories related to the Ukraine investigation, among other things. His work is not reliable.

Second, the AZ reporting system lists "new Covid deaths reported today." This may or may not list deaths that occured earlier that are being attributed to Covid, but we can take Solomon at his word in this instance (although I wouldn't recommend trusting him on much else). He seems to imply that old cases are being drudged up to induce hysteria in the masses. But what that means is that previous days were underreported. He's not disputing the total number of people killed by C19, just trying to create a conspiracy that somehow numbers are being inflated.

This remains, however, demonstrably false. There remains a consensus that death by C19 continues to be underreported. Death cited as due to other causes remains abnormally high, for example, and testing is not universal.

Third, so what? Any attempt to minimize the risk and the casualties by C19 in the USA is a fool's errand at this point. The United States has lost over 143,000 people and is approaching 4 million infected, many of whom will face life-altering consequences. A shill wants to point out that there is a lag in how cases are reported -- likely due to a lag in test results, a lag in compiling data, a lag in reporting, etc. -- to what end? To make people think C19 isn't serious? That it's just hype? That health officials are lying to you -- similar to attacks on the head of NIAID?

A fool's errand. The denial and utter stupidity of some people in the USA is what's led it to this place, and continued politicization of C19 will ensure that virus continues to kill and sicken huge numbers of people while other countries are reopening. It's a shame, really.

The article wasn't written by Soloman.  BTW from what I see He wasn't fired buy the WT. He resigned in 2008 if that was what you were discussing.  He was rehired in 2012.

Soloman's going after Hunter and Joe has been pretty good.

What evidence to you have of C19 being under reported. From what I've seen it's over reported.

https://cbs12.com/news/local/man-who-died-in-motorcycle-crash-counted-as-covid-19-death-in-florida-report

:D

I do think that infections are greater than testing shows but also testing has not been accurate and some labs have been over reporting infections.  Some in Florida were reporting a 90% infection rate.

Not sure what you point is on "fool's errand. Why are other countries reopening?  C19 will continue to kill. So will cars, flu, meningitis and a bunch of other things.

I do see bias from the Right but it's no where near the level of the Left.

Numbers to be compared with the normal deaths each year by seasonal flu and similar.

Countries want to open to ensure production, consumption that create jobs ongoing. Our economy.

I do see bias from the Right but it's no where near the level of the Left.

It's Solomon's "paper." The man has been discredited.

Solomon's reporting on Ukraine has been widely condemned as spreading false conspiracies and working in conjunction with the current administration to malign his political opponent. If it's been so good, how come nothing has stuck?

Regarding numbers, besides making intuitive sense (the US didn't do widespread testing for months, the Trump administration has a desire for low numbers even going so far as to want to stop testing and, if you remember, letting a ship with sick people on it not come to port in the US), the data I cited (huge increases of deaths linked to other causes such as heart attacks, etc., compared to normal for the same time periods, data reported by hospitals) is one factor. This has been widely reported. Furthermore, the CDC, Johns Hopkins University, Anthony Fauci and the NIAID, the National Association of Medical Examiners, and other groups all have the consensus opinion that deaths from C19 are undererported. I can't speak to the case you cite, but it's an anecdote. Furthermore, if you follow the link in the link that you cited, it was a mistake and the case was removed as a C19 case. One mistake doesn't prove a vast conspiracy of the inflation of cases, but I would be more likely to trust the organizations I cited, among others. The conspiracy of C19 inflation is linked to a March 29 Facebook post by way, way out there conpiracy theorist Candace Owens. It's been debunked completely. But if selection bias is a factor in where you source your news, you won't necessarily be getting accurate information.

The comparisons to other things that kill people is a false equivalency. Remember when people thought C19 was a hoax? Or that it was no big deal? And said things like "the flu kills more people in a year?" How wrong they were. The other difference is that the spread of C19 can be lessened or prevented by taking very simple measures such as wearing a mask and social distancing.

Why are other countries opening? Do you really have no idea about this? Put plainly, other countries implemented strict measures that brought their rate of infection down to almost nothing because people followed the measures. There weren't a bunch of people storming state capitals with assault rifles claiming that wearing masks is an infringement on their "constitutional rights" (without, of course, any talk about "responsibilities"). In these countries, people respect science and the opinions of experts in their respective fields, and their leaders didn't politicize the issues. If the USA had done this, the infection rate could be nearing zero instead of increasing dramatically and things would be getting back to normal.

Instead, people are spreading conspiratorial stories meant to diminish the effects of a virus that is on track to kill half the number of people who died in four years of World War II in less than a year.

C. Chicken, with all due respect...How is it that you can confidently make claims about what is happening here in the u.s., but you live in mexico city?  Pretty bold to be contradicting those who live and work here everyday?  I cant find any trust worthy sources of data.  All i know is what i have seen.  A whole lot of nothin...to be frank.

Solomon's reporting pretty much matches Giuliani's stuff and Rudy has documents to prove it.

Right off the CDC website.

"COVID-19 mortality may be undercounted"

The truth is they don't know.  IMO early on it was missed before the virus was identified.

What do you mean false equivalency?   Does it mean that we have to stop everything until it's fixed. We will never completely fix it. It will away be around.   We have to learn how to deal with it.

Give me a list of the measures implemented that has made other countries safer.

I think you got your wars wrong.  85 million people died during WWII  Right now we are up to only about 600,000 world wide.

Because I have been researching this -- I recorded a brief lecture on it and on conspiracies (if anyone speaks Spanish and has any interest). Because I value the opinions of scientists who have formed a consensus based on evidence and data. Because I care -- I have family and friends in the US, and I had planned to go back to the US in March, then in June, then in July, then in August, and all these trips are cancelled. Because I talk to my friends all the time about it. Because I have family members and friends who are health professionals who tell me first hand what is happening. Because so many people in the US are in denial while the number of people who die and who are infected skyrockets, despite simple measures that would prevent its spread.

*** I should add: Also because I have experience researching and publishing on conspiracy theories and how they work, and it continues to be a research interest of mine.

If people simply based their view of the world on what they have seen, how would you know that Namibia existed unless you had been there? To follow your logic -- I can't see it, so it must not be serious or true -- to its conclusion for everything would be ridiculous, no? And if you can't determine that the CDC or Johns Hopkins or NIAID or the National Association of Medical Examiners or any other number of organizations full of MDs and PhDs -- all have websites, all have addressed this issue -- are trustworthy, then there is nothing I can do for you. There has been some fantastic writing lately -- and some funny memes -- about the devaluation of knowledge and expertise and the assumption that "google university" is an equivalent to years of study. Politicization of the issue hasn't helped. It really doesn't take much more than common sense to find reliable information. The only obstacle to overcome is accepting even if it is contrary to your worldview. Or accepting it even if it means you're plans are cancelled or your life is inconvenienced. Remember the official US government narratives from February? From March? From April? From May? From June?

And, as I have said before, different regions will have different experiences. Florida, Texas, Georgia, and Arizona laughed at "liberal" Seattle and NYC because they were early epicenters of C19, and laughed at the precautions that were put in place that they viewed as infringements on their rights. Now look at them. Nobody where you are has Covid? That's great. Can you guarantee that nobody will have Covid? If not, doesn't taking simple precautions kind of make sense, if it potentially saves lives?

Wow. Guiliani and Solomon, quite a pair, huh?

False equivalency means comparing C19 to the flu is like comparing apples to bicycles. For the reasons I stated.

I'm not going to give you a list of measures other countries implemented. I named a few. Look it up. Do you think they were somehow magically successful and the USA just had bad luck? Also, look up the comparable data in chart form of the path of the virus in the US compared to other countries. Here is a good place for that: https://covid19.who.int/?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIjoHH8tTc6gIVRNbACh0zbABcEAAYASAAEgKyOfD_BwE

In terms of virus deaths and WWII casualties, I am talking about the USA. I thought that was obvious.

If not, doesn't taking simple precautions kind of make sense, if it potentially saves lives?
so you have been researching it?...safely, 1000 miles way in Mexico City.  While I still have to work everyday, so that I have enough money to buy food everyday, 120 miles or less from one of the initial epicenters?  And what I have (or not) seen is just more republican spew?  I am right here.  I never said anything about not locking down, not wearing a mask or doing whatever is necessary to stop any disease or cause of premature death except one thing...guarantee you are far less likely to meet any misfortune buried under a bunch of doctor's papers and data sheets in the safety of your living room?  This is all I am saying...the data does not add up under first person scrutiny but everybody is so scared to admit it.
I don't think it's a big plot from either "side".  Maybe just some media mania.  I don't know.  But if I don't know from right here.  YOU, sure as hell, have a LOT more research to do.
If it works good, it looks good...

Chicken...how about you tell us what you see in Mexico City?  And come on...be honest.  Pretty sure you are not living in an adobe hut around the corner from the taco stand/whore house with some guy with a big moustache and no shoes playing the guitar on the front porch.  Maybe that will prove how we are all such idiotic americans for not instantly biting at the media bate that I am sure you would even have to agree is largely garbage on a hook.

Yeah Giuliani and Solomon are great..

Still don't see the difference.

It's because there aren't any. Basically in other countries most have been exposed and virus has run it's course.  The WHO is nothing but a mouthpiece for the Chinese government.

Well I guess you need to explain yourself better.

Thank YOU for that. I'll continue my research based on your urging!

Please feel free to point out where anything I have said is false, and, as I have done, provide some reliable sources to back it up. If you don't think the data "add up," are you saying 143,000 Americans haven't died and 3.8 million -- that's one in 86 -- haven't fallen ill? If all you believe is what is in front of your eyes the earth must be flat and the moon made of cheese.

I am sorry you are feeling inconvenienced and lied to. I would, again, strongly recommend looking for information from reliable sources and taking precautions to ensure that you and the people you care about remain safe.

If you think that Mexico and where I live, Mexico City, and the people I care about here aren't struggling with this as well, you are sadly mistaken. My wife is pregnant, and we are taking every precaution that we can to prevent becoming ill. Mexico, similar to the USA, bungled its response. And similar to the USA, the poor are the people paying the heaviest price.
