Cleaning exhaust clamps on 750
« on: April 01, 2020, 10:44:52 PM »
Hi whats the best way to get rid of rust on the finned exhaust clamps on a CB750? I've tried a wire brush and a dermal to some success but not as clean as I would like. I recall using the works toilet bowl cleaner and a bunch of screws to remove rust from my tank 15 years ago and it work well. But I also recall remembering telling a friend to pour the works toilet on the hood on his Honda civic that he sanded down and was trying to go for the rust look effect and couldn't get it to happen and he reported the works did the trick pretty fast. The Works toilet bowl cleaner is hydro choleric acid I believe would the remove or create rust?
Anyone have any other ideas?

Evaporust works well, followed by what you already did.

Vapor blast would be ideal.  Sand blast will also work well.  Wire wheel on a bench grinder.  If these aren't an option you could rig up an electrolysis set up with vinegar and a car battery.

Vapor blasting will remove the rust, but not the chrome. I do it all the time!

Not sure how bad yours are, but I use Metal Rescue with good results.

soaked mine in kerosene and used a little elbow grease with a wire brush.  then painted them with high heat paint.  they've held up well for a year now with no signs of going bad.
