Waterproof Connectors?
« on: March 31, 2020, 04:45:58 PM »
Hi there,

I'm in the process of building a new simplified wiring harness for my m-unit blue install. Since I'm building the new harness from scratch, I thought I'd update the connectors as well. I recall Hondaman's note in his book that the original connectors were just barely enough for the power flowing, so I wondered if there are better options.

A while back, I ordered a set of the connectors in the attachment but now realize that the AWG usable would just be enough for connecting the motogadget handlebar switches to the m-unit but not further to the components. (See attachment)

Incidentally, these seem to be the same connectors supplied with the new starter solenoid that I got at revival cycles:

https://shop.revivalcycles.com/universal-starter-solenoid-with-main-fuse/

In this explanatory video for the solenoid, he's explaining that it's even possible to use a 12 gauge wire on the connector (at time mark 11:48):

So now I'm a bit confused regarding the usage of the connectors I bought. If possible I'd also would use the new connectors on the stator harness.

What do you guys think in general?

Self-locking Molex connectors are perfectly good and widely available. Stator harness should be 12-14AWG. Inputs to the mUnit can be 22AWG, outputs should be 18AWG, less even if your using LEDs on those circuits.

A small amount of dielectric grease on the spade ends of the Molex connectors will keep you running just fine unless you live in Indonesia and plan to ride through monsoons?

I'm guessing since the 10 amp wire I bought from vintageconnections (which I believe to be 18 AWG, since they write "18" on it) fits my plugs well, I can use that for all but the stator harness. I bought a aftermarket stator harness for the 750, and since I'l just connect that to the Rick's lithium Reg/Rec unit I guess I'm fine with wires. I'll just source another connector for that one then.

Thanks for your input, Cal!
