looking for a place to buy the 1in fuses on-line
« on: February 09, 2007, 12:28:27 pm »
I have been to almost every auto parts store in town and nobody has the 1in fuses that are in my 550.   I am using a 1.25in now but that will not allow the cover to go back on.  Anybody know of an on-line retailer that carries these fuses??

Thx!

No I didn't think of that.   I will call around and see what I can find.

Thx for the tip.

My 500s were easy in that they only have 1 fuse for everything, got tired of buying a whole size assortment box just to get that one 15 amp fuse,I`ll be switching over the 550 in the next couple of days too.
You can get the fuse block assemblies at any Auto Parts store and then run the blade type fuses which in an emergency can be found at almost any gas station.

Hello Doug,

If you end up staying with the regular fuse holder.........

These people have all the 1" fuses........

     http://www.newark.com

You will find the fuses under the catagory of Electrical and Circuit Protection.

I found all the 1" fuses I need for my '74 CB750 K4 at their website location.

I look for one of those at a parts house and couldn't find one. Also looked at a stereo shop, no luck. Where did you find that? Looks perfect. I made one out of my stock block. Took out the fuse holders, cut the block to fit female spade connectors, plugged in fuses and epoxied them in place, ground smooth, painted satin black,  looks stock!

I got the fuses I needed at advanced auto. They had all kinds of fuses there. But the glass fuses have a lot of resistance and one of my fuse holders was melted into the block! So I opted to switch over to the blade style fuse to get more voltage to my coils and headlight!!

make sure you clean the holders out with some steal wool or a rifle cleaning brush. Get it shiney.

There is also another option, although despirate, you can also go to an open wrecking yard and hit every car you can and load your pockets with fuses.  Of course I have never stooped to this level ::).

Couple of things here.  Glass fuses are not higher resistance.  The reason why the fuse blocks typcially melt is due to a improper size fuses, or poor connection (resistance)  between the fuse and the blades on the fuse box.  Corrosion and weak clamping force on the blades is the typical culprit.  If you want to keep the old fuse block (replace it shows signs of melting) clean the the blades by dipping the whole business in tarnX.  Works great on all the brass/copper connections on the bike and doesn't hurt the plastic.  Also bend the blades closer together to increase the clamping force.  If you use the incorrect size fuse (too long or too short) then less of the fuse contact point is in connection with the blades and the connection is weaker.  Get the right size fuses, clean the blades and bend them a bit tighter together and your stock fuse box will work fine.

I believe what you are looking for is an 8AG fuse, such as these:
http://www.action-electronics.com/fus8ag.htm

I agree with eurban that cleaning the surface oxidation off the clips is essential.
Corrosion = resistance=heating = melting of fuses and melting of fuse block.
High fuse clip retention force also lowers the contact resistance.
I use Semichrome polish on the clips or rolled up enery cloth on the contact surfaces.

The original factory fuseblock is still available form Honda complete with the fuses in it if you want to go that route. That's what I did.

What voltage rating do we select when ordering these glass fuses?  Choices include: 32v, 58v, 80v and 125v.

Thanks, Mike

The voltage rating is for insuring that there will be no arcing for a voltage below the rating.  I.E. Using a 58V fuse may arc (even if blown) when the voltage applied is higher than the rating.

Since the peak voltage encountered on an SOHC4 is normally under 20 V, any voltage rating you mentioned will be fine.

But, you wouldn't want to use a 32V fuse in a 125V line.
