cb550 oil galley plug under stator rotor questions
«

On my 78 cb550 I have sprung a leak from the oil galley plug under the stator rotor. It was spewing out quite a bit of oil. I replaced the old hard O ring and Hondabonded the O ring and the mating surface after a thorough cleaning with acetone. I hope this takes care of the leaks because the crank seal is very fresh and even if it is leaking, I can't imagine it would be this much volume.
My question is:
Why is there a gap from the plug to the stator cover of about 1/8"? What is the reason for this and is it necessary? Has anyone added some sort of a spacer to close the gap and hold the plug in place?
Thanks in advance.

Look in the cover, there is a cast peg that stops the plug, Honda designed it that way and it has worked on many 1,000's of bikes sonce 71

The cast peg is about 1/8" below the gasket surface allowing the plug to move that much.
