Oil Leak in the Oil Pump area
« on: April 07, 2020, 11:23:02 AM »
Hi all,

So when i got my 75 CB550 I was told it didn't leak, but it also didn't run so there was no way to verify.
I got it running with a carb rebuild and all was good there, but there was a pretty good leak from the oil pump area.
Like when I pulled the cover off there was a good 1/4 cup of oil in the oil pump section. Messy...
So I ordered the rebuild kit from Vital Parts and replaced everything.
My problem is that I still have an oil leak into that oil pump section. It's not bad, just leaks 4-5 drops every time I stop the bike and park it. But obviously I don't want to have it continue like that.

Any ideas on what may be causing oil to leak into that area?
Maybe one of the orings got pinched in reassembly or there is another path for oil to get into that area that is not related to the pump?
I also replaced the seal on the shifter and the seal behind the sprocket and those areas seem to be nice and dry so its not from there.

Just looking for ideas before I order another rebuild kit and do it all over again.

Is it possible the orings in that kit are not the best or too skinny?

Oil can leak through the oil pressure switch or round the threads where it screws in

Semi Geriatric ex-Honda mechanic and MOT tester (UK version of annual inspection). Garage full of "projects" mostly 500/4 from pre 73 (no road tax in UK).

Switch is brand new installed with thread sealer so I hope not...

Umm...are you sure it's coming from the oil pump and not from the shifter shaft? Reason I ask: 98% of the seal kits out there are selling 14mm ID seals for these shifter shafts, which are supposed to be 13.8mm shaft size. The 14mm ones leak as soon as you put the bike on the sidestand with hot oil inside...

^^^ I suspect too, it leaks via shifter shaft oil seal. Had this issue too. Proper seal fixed that
