Solenoid Clicks
« on: April 15, 2020, 09:27:34 AM »
CB550 stock wiring, starter stopped working mid ride. First attempt to use starter made a "zoot" noise that sounded like low battery. Later attempt made solenoid clicking sound.

Tested battery, 12.6v bike off, 11v bike on (headlight off).

Checked starter switch internals, looks good (rebuilt last summer).

Arced solenoid with screw driver, no reaction from starter.

I removed battery and solenoid so far. Can remove starter motor next. It's likely that the starter motor is the source of the problem, correct? And I can test by setting on the ground and touching the lead to a battery?

Try jumper cables from car to cycle, if starter spins your battery is shot.

What would sufficient voltage be with the key switched on? I have other batteries I can test with.

I can still start and ride the bike and run lights and stuff, just can't use the starter.

Thanks for the responses earlier. I tested with another battery and the starter worked. Is the solenoid still supposed to click when the starter runs?

Solenoid should click on 11 volts, that may not turn the starter.
