GS550 Suzuki
« on: April 15, 2020, 02:05:14 PM »
Hi there, Scott here. I'm not sure if I'm in the correct category for this question but I recently bought a 1979 GS550 Suzuki. The engine is seized. I put Marvel Mystery oil in the cylinders & waited 2 days. I unfortunately removed the RH points cover & started to rock the engine back & forth with a breaker bar. I felt a snap. I managed to break the dowel pin on the crank that turns the points cam. :(  Now the pin is broken off flush on the end of the crankshaft. Anyone have any ideas as to how to repair it or am I screwed?

Order a new one. Still available? That will give you a clue to it’s actual size and how it gets inserted. Drill out the old one......

I talked to a freind of mine last night & he sugessted the same thing. He said it wasn't a big deal. I also have a another question. I'm trying to figure out exactly what model I have. The bike was built late 1978. It's a 1979 GS550 according to the title. Serial # is GS550-121575. Any ideas as to how to find out what model this. is. Thanks.

Look this over. If its a 'cruiser' you got the L model and if its the nicer standard its an E.  https://www.suzukicycles.org/GS-series/GS550E.shtml

I have an E tank, seat and a couple of tail coals, if you're in need of bodywork.

Still not sure what model I have. I don't think it's a cruiser. I think it's a standard. I have wire wheels & a single front disc with drum brakes in the rear.

This is all I have on my phone at the moment.  Original cover, no rips or tears, solid pan. I used the mounting bracket and hinges on my other seat.

Thanks Scott S for the pic. Does the seat hinge from the side or the rear?

Hinges from the side. I can get more pics if you need them; that's all I had on my phone at the time.

No that's perfect. I really want that seat but I need to get this engine unseized first before I go to much further. I am going to remove the left engine cover this weekend. Hopefully I'll be able to get on the crank & free the engine up. The bike sat outside under a tarp for a period of unknown time with the spark plugs out. Water in #1 cylinder. :(

If the plugs were out and water got in sounds like it may need some major attention and work. Have you drained out the old oil yet to see how much water is in there ?

Very cool. Man that engine looks stuffed. :)   I'm still trying to warm up to Suzuki. I'm an old Honda guy from way back. This GS550 is my first Suzuki. But I do truly like all Jap bikes.

I have 2 Suzuki's and I love them as much as my Honda, Yamaha & Kawasaki's!

It's ok to spread the love...

While I was trying to un stick my engine I was on the RH side of the bike. In an earlier post I mentioned I managed to break the little dowel pin on the end of the crank that turns the points advance unit. Any ideas where I can get another pin or at least find out what size it is? Scott.

Have you checked the parts fiche for the part number and if it states the size?  Once you have the part number, google it and/or search eBay.

Note: I dont know what model year you have....

Hey Scott S. How much for the Suzuki parts please?

All of them? I have the whole lot on my local CL for $100 for everything. I even found a chain guard and hardware, too.
I have the tank badges that came off that tank as well.

$100.00 sounds good to me for all of that. I especially want the seat but I'll take all the other stuff for that price. How much to ship the parts to Salisbury, MD 21801?  Thanks.

Hey Stev-o. Thanks for that but the drawings don't show the pin. 1979 GS 550. It's on the end of the crank. RH side.
