Thoughts on 4into1 Shocks
« on: April 16, 2020, 09:00:23 AM »
I'm trying to replace my worn out original shocks. The springs are sagging much more than they should. I'm getting a gnarly pogo effect in corners right now. I would like to upgrade to some ikons, but I'm not sure I can swing the purchase yet.

As a temporary solution, I found these on 4into1: https://4into1.com/black-shocks-eye-clevis-321mm-12-5-8-honda-cb-cl-sl350-cb-cj-cl360-cb-cm400-cb-cl-cm450-cb500-550-650-700-750/

Anybody have any experience with these?

I was in a similar situation. My stock shocks were literally bowing and just sagged like crazy. I had purchased a new exhaust system and was short on cash so figured I'd take the risk and get them. A few things I noticed:

1. They're really stiff. Having a 2nd person on the back supposedly makes them more comfortable but I don't take passengers.
2. They're about as heavy as the OEM shocks. Maybe a few grams lighter but I got the 321mm ones. There's a few casting seams on them in places, but are well polished and the chrome is nice on mine. Had to use the original rubber grommets as the new ones were too small. Fortunately they were in good shape.
3. The clevis threads are a slightly different thread pitch so I had to get new bolts.

Im actually pretty satisfied with them considering how damn cheap they were. To me, they're satisfactory till I have a few hundred bucks to really upgrade. I'm about to head over to my garage I'll update with a few pics

Thanks for the insight! Rebuilding the front end really showed the poor performance of the rear shocks. I do a mix of every kind of riding: a little off-road, two-up multiday trips, and solo commuting. It sounds like these would at least be an improvement over the bouncy bottoming-out of the original shocks.

Probably! Also they're manufactured by emgo if that means anything to you. For 60 bucks, if they serve their intended purpose, even partially, you're not doing too bad haha

I’ve used them a few times and truthfully, for the price, they are a great value, and look good.

Hey Pielz did you have to put a spacer up top so the shroud doesn’t touch the frame? And instead of using washers at the bottom you bent the arms in?

It actually fit really well at the bottom. My guess is tightening the bolts down bent the tabs in a little. I hadn't even noticed actually. and nope I didn't need any spacers up top! Just used the original rubber bushings from the old shocks

Delkevic! I love it. Originally had an old vintage jardine 4 into 2 that was just barely cutting it. Oh, it's also stainless steel so no rust, didn't require a re-jet, and was only 325 bucks shipped!

Hi pielz. Could you explain what you mean by really stiff? As in overly stiff or more suited to a sportier ride? I’m currently running rebuilt koni 76f-1302 on my 550 and they come with a linear rate 112lb spring, which under 20mm preload (lowest setting) provides just about the right amount of sag.

Do yours feel like there’s no suspension at all? Wondering if the 4into1 repros would’ve just been fine for mine

From my very limited experience with motorcycles (only vintage bikes 1980 and earlier) every one that I've ridden has felt at least 30 percent softer at the lowest preload setting. I know that's an awful metric as it's totally subjective but it's the best I've got considering nobody I reached out to could give me specs on these shocks.

I haven't measured but I weigh about 230 at 6 feet tall, and with all my weight on the bike, it seems to sag by only a few mm

Also I should say that it's entirely possible that every bike I've ever ridden aside from this one now has had dickered shocks. So take that with a grain of salt. Haha I hope this can help at least a little though

Partially! 70-80s bikes are too soft! Especially nowadays. I grew up in a world of track days so my sense of normal may be off. You should definitely measure rider sag one day, but overly, do you have any issues with pogo-ing or bouncing or do they feel properly damped?

Nope, they seem to dampen really well. A heck of a lot better than the ones that were on there! The old ones bounced like an old truck haha

For a stock bike these look and work OK
https://www.ebay.de/itm/291937869496?ViewItem=&item=291937869496
I had to use the higher setting.

I replaced these with IKON
https://www.ebay.de/itm/Honda-CB-750-Four-K0-K1-K2-K6-IKON-KONI-Stosdampfer-Federbeine-mit-Chromkappen/292045206707?hash=item43ff4034b3:g:l4MAAOSwTuJYutAd

Not that much better.
I was used with other Ikons with progressive springs that are comfortable and active at the same time.
The non progressive Ikons, damping setting soft (2) for cruising around or active (3) (hard, not that comfy) for inspired riding.  Spring height middle

I bought my progressive springed Ikons for my K6 here. I prefer these. damper setting 2. Spring height middle

Great to hear! Helps me understand my damping selection. I actually run mine on the 4th position but there’s a caveat behind that, the shock oil used is 2.5w. I believe 5w is what koni/ikon put in their shocks. In theory it’s the same in real-world situation the deviation shouldn’t be too off.

Also both the shocks you posted are the 7610-1296 sp8! Very hard to find them with linear springs and I believe the only linear one they offer is not the right length. I was always under the impression of linear springs are better to control than progressives.
