Cb750k(5) bolt length/positioning?
« on: April 18, 2020, 11:55:30 AM »
I picked up a disassembled bike.  Does anyone have a document that shows which m6 machine screw goes into which hole for the valve cover and left side covers?  When I have done this job on cb550/cb500 engines, I use a color printout of a photo of the head taped to cardboard, and i have a hole punched through each bolt head image. So as the bolts come out, they get put in the proper hole, they wait there in place until reassembly. 1:1 perfect.  Now here I have a bag of old bolts.  I will prob replace with them Allen head stainless... and yes I could figure it out (proper length bolt by available thread depth), but if someone already HAS this info they wanna share, then great.   Thanks in advance. :-)
I recently restored and sold a 77 cb750f, and am nearly finished with a (former basket case) cb750k5.  This is a place to share, learn and enjoy.  I am grateful to and for 99+% of this site's membership.

I usually put the dry cover  in place (no gasket or sealant) and start screwing in the fasteners. When you have them all started a couple of turns, they should all protrude about the same amount (1/4”-3/8”). Swap the  ones that don’t sit right, until they do.

Hint: screws that are for the holes inside a centring dowel, may be a bit longer. The threads only start below the inserts and are often a bit deeper.

Important to not use too long bolt. The bottom can crack very easy with an alu plug falling inside engine.

Many bolts can be 2-3 mm longer than Honda used.

When in doubt, drop a screw into the hole in the cover and see how far it protrudes on the inside; it's normally about 1/2".
Don't fix it if it ain't broke!
