Gouge on 77 750F cylinder head surface- can this be saved?
« on: April 02, 2020, 07:35:00 PM »
Removed the cylinder head on my 77 750f a short while ago to do a top-end freshen. was about to pack the head up to send to cycle x for a valve guide replacement when i found a few little gouges right on the edge of the combustion chamber. I dont think a resurface would clean it up. Unsure of where to go from here.

Cleaned up the area with some scotch brite for visibility.

Surprised no one else has commented. It looks like it wasn’t leaking before. Would be under the metal ring in the head gasket that would probably conform to it. I’d risk it. Anyone else?

I don't think it'll be a problem.

A little resurface should be good enough

Could have a bit of weld added then surfaced. Easy enough to do.

I have heard Cast is hard to do for sure unless you are decent with a tig or spool gun. ive fixed some little aluminum pieces with alumiweld rod before that is used with a conventional torch. how would you approach this?

I'd just mill the head 0.020", myself. The head gasket you will install on it will be that much thicker in the end, anyway.
BTW: when you get there, contact me for the correct O-rings for the oil passages between cylinders and head, or it will leak oil...

This seems like the best way to go since Im having it sent out to be refurbed anyway. I'll discuss it with Ken once he receives it. BTW, I have an OEM gasket still in the plastic I was going to use. I assume when you say the head gasket will be thicker you are refering to an MLS piece which I probably will end up going with since I am already working with cycle x to get my cylinders and head surfaced. Also, are you referring to the (2) 11x2.5mm O-rings (91310-426-000)? I got lucky and my local bike shop had em on the shelf. Unless I am mistaken of course.

Unless that head gasket is an OEM made of asbestos, before 1996, it will be 1.0mm thick (or more). The original head gasket was 0.8mm thick. Those O-rings must become 2.6mm thick instead of 2.4mm, or it WILL leak oil form those 2 passages: there are dozens upon dozens of threads here about it, which is why I send out these O-rings for donations to the forum.  PM me for details.

Just got my head back from Cycle X. They did a beautiful job. the surface cleaned up with less than a 10 thou cut so all is well.
