Buffo needs some help with not so new bike (REVISED)
« on: June 09, 2005, 08:17:53 PM »
well i guess its best to start at the beginning.. I HAVE A 1978 CB750K

My pile had a HUGE fairing on the front end, so i took it off and found that there was no head light behind the fairing. I took the head light out of the fairing just to find that there is no mounting hardware for the head light in the head light housing. So i took the mount out of the fairing but it doesnt fit in the housing on the bike.

I need this mounting apparatice. Would anyone have one that they would be willing to sell me? I need everything including the bolts, trim pieces and such.

Back to the HUGE fairing. There is NO WAY that it was a factory installation. i have a mess of wires hanging on the left hand side of the triple tree and no idea what goes to what. there is no head light connection and it appears that it was cut out and used in the HUGE fairing. There is a connection harness that went from the bike to the fairing but i cant imagine that that huge connector will fit in the headlight bucket with the headlight in it. Who ever did all this CUT the mounting brackets for the front turn signals off of the front forks leaving just the round part that goes around the forks by the Honda name plate  under the headlight. So now theres a rusty hole where eaach of my front turn signals should be.

I dont know how to read wiring diagrams very well.  Does anyone have any advice for me conserning my wiring problem?

Does anyone have any ideas about the hack job i have to my turn signals that i have to repair  or hide and mount front turn signals somewhere else?

Thank you for your consideration
Don

Every wire that is supposed to be in the head light bucket gets plugged into connectors that have matching colored wires on them.  Strip out what doesn't match at all that may have been supplied by the fairing installer.  Then get yourself a whole new headlight, bucket, and signal set up from a junk yard or E-bay.  If you find it in a junk yard you might want to pull the harness as well to have an un-molested example to work from.  You may even need to use it as a replacement harness or for parts.

I was lucky in that my fairing was installed with those clip on splices and not hacked in to the harness.  If your harness has been chopped up it might be time to start with another harness.

Dont be affraid to pull every connector loose and straighten them out to start over.  For example if you have a black wire with white tracer coming from the harness every component that has a black wire with white tracer goes to it.

Green wire coming from the harness......  Plug every green wire you find into it and so on.

Don,
I bought a headlight from a salvage yard over the internet, when I found myself in the same position.  I thought it would come with everything I needed.  Boy was I wrong, in fact it was the wrong bucket for my bike.  Keep checking Ebay.  Good Luck

chris, Thanks for the advise. I pulled off all of the jerry rigged wires and splices, pulled all the wires back into the bucket and desiphered most of them. Am i correct in finding that the 2 black leads thet have different two colored bands on them (orange & white and blue & white)that lead to wires of the same color and are live when the key is on to be head light leads? i take it that they are to be connected at the same place? high and low beam?

The hi-lo beam switch was removed from the turn signal switch. and there are 2 wires running from near the switch to the headlight bucket. one is blue the other is white, nither one is connected to anything at ether end. are these the hi-lo beam wires? what do they connect to in the bucket?

Thanks for the knowledge!
Don

Hi Don
The orange-white and blue-white wires go to the turn signals and power the running lights.
Blue is high beam and white is low beam and go to the 3 pronged light connector.

Thanks Einyodeler! that cleared up a lot. :D

i have 3 more wires that i need to desipher and i am tring to read the wiring diagram correctly.

down by the horn i have 2 green wires and one black. ithey were just hanging there so i hooked the black one and a green one to the horn and tht works now but i have a left over green with wich i take it is a ground wire. but i dont know what it goes to.

in the head light bucket i have a [brown single], a [green double] and a [black double from a triple]. All are female connectors in the plastic covers, all not connected to anything. Are these suppose to be unconnected? To be used for accessaries?

The brown and the black double off the triple aren`t connected in mine either.
You should have 2 green double connectors: 1 set for the turn signal grounds and the other set for the speedo and tach light grounds

The green one that is in the buket that isnt connected is a single green wire with a double female connector.

and thenthere is the "extra" green wire with the female connector down by my horn.

The green wires in the bucket all share the same ground so they are all interconnected. You should have 1 single with double female and 1 single with triple female connectors.Since they all share the same ground it does`nt matter which order they get plugged in as long as you have ground hooked up for the following:
1) Tach light
2) Speedo light
3) Left signal
4) Right signal
5) High beam indicator light
The extra ground by the horn is for accessories such as aftermarket running lights. ;)

WoW! I cant believe how much i got done today! My bike went from a pile with a mess of aborted, tangled wires hanging out of the back of the headlight bucket the size of a Big Mac with extra cheese to a great project pile with not much more to go before the first test launch! :D

Einyodeler, you have been a great help! I hope i will be able to do the same for you some day. Thank you. ;D

I can hardly wait for you guys to tell him he's got to remove the front forks to get the new/replacement Headlight mount ears on to hold the headlight bucket in place...

Now would be a good time to replace the fork seals anyway or go with aftermarket brackets

I have the headlight bucket on the bike already, i just need the thing that goes into the bucket and holds the light and some trim pieces i guess.

Someone cut off the turn signal mounts. I will most likely grind a smooth surface, prep and coat the raw metal  and glue a reflector there or some other damn thing. If i get nailed for no front turn signals i will do something then.
