What Sprockets should I use?
« on: June 09, 2020, 08:25:45 AM »
I have a 1975 CB750 four. I want to make my bike run a little lower rpm when out on the highway. I am running stick sprockets are this time. What would be a good sprocket combination to run for highway?

Stock is fine Hondas thrive on revs and economy will probably go worse if you change
Semi Geriatric ex-Honda mechanic and MOT tester (UK version of annual inspection). Garage full of "projects" mostly 500/4 from pre 73 (no road tax in UK).

So you have 18 front 48 back. Lot of bikes got changed to the lower 17 front. I run the stock 18. This is a K model 750 correct and not an F.

17:48 runs really well and match the engine and gearbox.

Going the other way on a stocker might force you to gear down all the time, maybe not possible to cruise on 5th gear against the wind.
17:48 revs just 250 rpm more at 60mph than 18:48

My K6 had 17:48 on long tourings in high speeds on Autobahn. Worked really fine.

I changed from 18:48 to 17: 48 a few days ago despite my engine has plenty of torque early, 1005cc.
I got thoughts about extra pain for trans and clutch when twisting from low so I changed back to 17 at front.
Bike felt much better direct!

My stock K2 runs also 17:48.

I knew some that used 45t rear back in the days.
Maybe with 17t front.

don't forget... rear tire overall actual diameter has a big effect on final drive ratios.  And don't get confused by tire sizes!  A 130/90/17 may be taller than a 4.00x18 depending  manufacturer.
If it works good, it looks good...

Not 18:48, if going 18:45 or more ;)
