16 tooth front sprocket with 530 chain?
« on: April 26, 2020, 12:46:42 pm »
Well pulled the trigger and order the 16 tooth 530 front sprocket for 78 550 from sprocket specialists.  I am assuming I can still run the stock 530-100 chain with stock 37 tooth sprocket.  Can anyone confirm this?

It would just be one less link, yeah? Assuming 17 is what you had before using 100 links

I would say not so true but this guy made a comment on old thread about gearing,  although he states he has a +3 rear and only up 2 links in the chain, not 3.  He also states 100 link will work for +/-, 1-2 tooth gears.  But I’m looking to confirm for the front sprocket only from anyone who has ran a 16thooth front.

Oh gotcha! Yeah, I can't imagine it'd cause any harm. I dropped a tooth in my front gear on my 750 (16F 48R 530 conversion) and had to drop a link but that's a totally different bike. And hey, at least you can always remove links, adding them is the hard part If I'm thinking about this properly, it might just cost you a few mm of chain adjustment breathing room.

Being a current military machinist, I am only assuming the 16tooth front sprocket teeth are dimensionally machined and spaced so that it will fit a 100 link chain from center to center of each link.  I am only saying this from what the guy posted in the old thread, even though he is not running a 16 tooth front sprocket.....

Thanks for the input, unless someone else chimes in who has ran a 16 tooth sprocket. I’ll just have to wait until it gets to my house and find out. 🍻

Yeah, that's what return policies are for lol! I wonder if one of those online chain link/sprocket calculators would help too?

I won’t be a whole lot of help but, I have a 77’ CB550K with a 16 tooth front sprocket and 37 rear and a 530 chain. I purposely bought the 110 link just in case I needed extra and don’t recall what I cut off. I want to say it was 10 links. The 16 tooth is what our bike needs to make it wake up a bit but if you drive highway a lot, expect to be sitting around 5000k going 60mph lol. Overall it’s a good setup for what I use the bike for

Alittle update, the sprocket came in and the 16tooth will work with stock 530 chain and rear sprocket.  But sprocket specialist sent me a sprocket without the machined raised sections like the stock sprocket.  They said they could send me some shims but I am not keen on the shims for near the case as they would be free floating.  For One, the sprocket bolts aren’t long enough.  And if I did get longer bolts I would have to drill and tap holes on the shim to secure it in place because of the sprocket “play” from the factory.  Or if there was enough room for two short nuts to the hold the spacer in place.  I sent them an email back about making a solid sprocket with the raised middle.  JT sprockets has them but takes awhile to get here as it it shipping from England.  I do give props to sprocket specialist for good customer service and willing to work with me.

Hopefully this works, I had to made some spacers on my waterjet, out of 304 SS to make up for the shoulder that is not there on the new sprocket.
