1975 CB550 with no airbox - what are my options???
« on: April 30, 2020, 09:48:23 pm »
Hi everyone.
I have a situation I'm sure people have read about thousands of times. Sorry in advance.
I have a 1975 CB550 F that I just picked up for a reasonable price.
The problem (well, one of the very many) is that it came with the dreaded foam pods.
I personally love the look of cones or even stacks but Im aware that nothing will get the bike running better than the stock air box.
Unfortunately I cannot find an air box for a reasonable price anywhere and the foam pods aren't ideal with the current stock Main 98 and Slow 38 jets.
So my question is:
Since I have to, what setup would be best (an least expensive) for me to run the engine the best way?
Perhaps the foam pods are ok with a re jet? Maybe the cones are fine if you toss a few straws in them to restrict some air flow? (I've seen it done and people have said it worked wonders)
OR
Maybe someone has a spare air box kicking around?
Anyways,
Thanks so so so much for your attention everyone and I'm hella excited to be a part of the community.

Post in wanted section for an airbox for your year and model bike. Unless you have motor work with high lift long duration cam and more displacement you won't need or want pods.

answered your other post in the hipo section
i bet you can get an airbox for 30-50 $
decent separate filter cost too, no?
add your jetting costs/tryouts an do your math

Maybe the cones are fine if you toss a few straws in them to restrict some air flow? (I've seen it done and people have said it worked wonders)

now this one is something i never heard of in 40 years of wrenching.... pictures or it didnt happen.... never mind the USD logic of restricting flow

Middle one of top3 is best value as it has boots and top tray
