Do you guys know where I can get a set of tappet cover seals?  The covers are fine.....looks like the seals need replacing though.

cmsnl or davidsilverspares have OEM stuff. or look up the part number in the partslist and stick in google, then you get all sorts of hits.
for these kind of things i normally buy OEM as those fit best and last longest.

ok.....the good.... started to clean the carbs tonight with my son.  Got the kit from 4 into 1.  Has bowl gasket, top gasket, float neadle, and various round gaskets.  All going well except I think the carb cleaner got to me a bit (had a fan on but still ......wow).

The not so good.......when taking the components apart, I noticed that fuel mixture screw washer and gasket on carb 3 is not there.....and the kit does not have a washer (it does have a gasket though)......and it is the size of an atom so I cant find it!!!!

Soooooo......anyone know where I can get this one washer.....or 4 of them....or? 

We wanted to try to clean them, set them up, and try to install them to see if the bike would at least start (have not been able to do that yet)

will order 2 to be sure I have enough.....or to say it another way.....in case I loose one again!!

Looks like my oil leak is coming from the cam cover/tappet area.  The bike sits on its kick stand (I dont have a stand to sit it upright yet) and even not running the oil will pool at the top of the head on the first fin which is where gravity will bring it in this position.  I will get a top end gasket set and see if just changing those very top end gaskets will help.

if oil gets on the top fin, a pretty likely cause is from the cam shaft end cap. there are 2 o-rings on the studs that keep the end cap located in the rocker shaft holes. and there's a bracket that the cap is screwed on to. there are washers on the bolt keeping the bracket in place, check the partslist for that. the washers need to be sealing ones, e.g. from copper.

Got it.....one question about putting that cover back on( I was going to get a kit and replace the breather cover and cam cover gaskets).  I see on the service manual it shows to torque the bolts to 6-9 ftlbs .....how about the screws on top?  My motor has a combination of JIS screws and bolts holding all of it down.

any 6mm copper washer will do. it doesn't have to be OEM honda.
the honda ones are actually more fancy, i don't remember what exactly - maybe brass coated with zinc? but copper works fine there, and is easier and cheaper to get. also on the rocker cover, those bolts that have oil behind them need sealing washers so better just get a few of them.

the bolts holding down the rocker cover:
i'd replace the jis with allen heads. be careful with torque on all 6mm bolts that go into alu on these blocks. it's very easy to strip the threads, especially with a torque wrench. it's enough to carefully nip them tight by hand.

Another question.....I see some people have used a polish on a q-tip and used that to polish the seats in the carburetor.....float seat and fuel mix seat.  Opinions on that.....and if good to go can you point me to a polish?

why do you want to do that? do the carbs leak?

Fair enough.....was just trying to do all the good things that should be done while they are apart, but I see your point.

On a side note.....my son cleaned the engine up yesterday with carb cleaner and some degreaser.  Got heavy handed and now the finish is etched on the aluminum and some pait is missing.  Oh whell, learning moment.  Will add that to the list of things to repair.

So after cleaning and drying over night I went and looked and so far no oil.....again I have not run this bike at all and was getting some seepage along the downward fins as it sat on the side stand.  Also, I think I mentioned this.....but while I was poking around u noticed a bolt loose.  It is the one on the head between the two and three exhaust pipes in the pic.  I snuggled it pretty good.  I wonder if that was my source?  Doesn't explain the top fin though.

Lastly.....do you know what type of handle bars are these?  Not stock as the wires are not through the handles....and not clip on' as I have learned.

Do those channels align with the downtubes of the frame at the front of the motor?  Could be for a fairing with some sort of engine protector.  Looks homemade

The homemade device is a fairing mount for a Windjammer fairing I would bet. The angles and orientation look right and the mounting arm holes looked spaced correctly.
Probably could sell it on eBay or here if someone wanted to put a Hammer on a 77-78 cb550. Frames were different on 74-76 but don't know if the changes affected these mounts. I need one for my 74.

where's the fuel level in those carbs? in the pic where you hold up the tubes it looks high to me, but that might just be the angle that the picture was taken at.

congrats for firing it up - that is indeed priceless  :D
the idle sounds high. should be around 1200rpm.

All levels were sitting right at the flange of the bowls.  I did not touch the float adjustment when we cleaned them and this is where it settled to.

Yup that first start from was high and I lowered it to 1000 per the manual after getting the spark plug wires right and restarting. 

So 1200 is the correct number?
