F3 valve srings in a k hot rod??
« on: February 07, 2007, 06:14:41 PM »
Has anyone ever tried running F3 valve springs in a k head? They are stronger springs, but are they as good as a high performance springs? I'm running a webcam 63a cam ( .370 lift ) I would think with the lighter valve and aluminum retainers, that this would be a good setup?
The thing about common sense is that, it's not that common.

The stiffer F3 springs would probably work OK.  Used springs are a gamble though. If it were my motor, I would get a new set of quality HD springs.  Not  too expensive . . .

That 63A web cam is pretty mild....

If your interested in more RPM I'd look to retainers. Specifically the kibblewhite stuff.

With a large lift and an agressive profile you would benefit from stiffer springs in relation to valve float at higher rpms.

But that aint a 63A grind lol

Bent valves suck. So does the cost of a new head gasket. Get the ones that the MFG sells They are under $100 with alum retainers, $200 with Tit. retainers.

I just purchased a set of Kibblewhite Ti retainers. Holy crap...the price was up over 60% from about 8 months ago. Bronze guides were up too. At least the springs were close to the same price.

Yeah I noticed that and was kicking myself for not hoarding.

Have you ever run the 5.0mm conversion? If so what was your thoughts on it?

I have a set of aluminum retainers and a set of (maybe) high perf springs.  I don't know what kind they are, they were in an engine I had that hasn't been ran too much. The F3 springs have more seat preasure that the aftermarket ones.

So are after market springs that are new better than Honda F3 springs that are used?

I have the conversion in my engine. It's great but pricey. I had the difference in weights written down somewhere????? Much, much lighter and a 34mm intake valve. It looks funny having these small springs and retainers sitting on the head. I also sent a kit to Sparty's June 2007 playmate samcr750. :D

The aftermarket springs should have less coils (Kibblewhite do)which allows higher lift cams before coil bind. That cam isn't too bad so the F3 should work. Just measure lift to coil bind.

As a major manufacturer of titanium retainers for motorcycles, I can tell you that we are just getting killed on titanium prices every time we order it. Don't see any relief in site. There used to be Russian titanium available that kept a lid on prices, but no more.

Good valve springs are not a lot of money. Why would someone want to run used springs.
