1974 CB550 project
« on: May 24, 2020, 07:24:41 AM »
Hello all! I recently purchased a ‘74 CB550 as a project. Looks like the second to last owner was using it as a parts bike. Guy i bought it from hd gotten it in an eviction sale type situation.

So far ive stripped the bike down to the frame and engine (planning on removing engine to paint both separately).

Been rebuilding the carbs and going through all the parts to see whats usable. So far Ive discovered I only have 1 of 4 of the main jet clips... and they seem virtually impossible to find on the internet, literally everywhere is out of stock. Anyone have an extra set lying around that i could purchase? Would be eternally grateful seeing as the carb wont operate properly without this piece.

The bike also came with a ton of parts and things i may not have use for. Oem mostly. Will be posting them as i decide theyre not needed incase anyone is in need.

Another note I need some feedback on: I went to drain the old oil, and put a new filter in. Upon removing the oil filter cover, a piece of the engine side threading just fell off...

Ouch! How tight did someone think the filter nut should be? Wow , like maybe they were trying to keep those gaskets on forever and only change the filter? I've been known to pick up some pretty beat 550's from time to time, have never seen that. Looks like somebody is looking for another lower case but , it could be easier to pick up another engine with a good bottom end and trade out the top ends if the one you have now is any good.
A few Honda 500's, a few Honda 550's, a few Honda 650's, '72 cb 450, a couple 500/550/650 hybrids, and 2001 750.

Luckily this bike came with a spare engine. Thats the move eh? Ive yet to pull the filter cover off of the spare. We’ll see how that goes..
