9 Pin Connector and Rando Green Wire
« on: May 12, 2020, 11:25:16 AM »
Making headway on my melted CB550 but the 9 pin connector from the generator has seen better days - it crumbles when I look at it - and I don't want to have another fire.

I've searched for a replacement at the usual online sources like vintage connections and cycle terminal and cannot locate one. Of the 9 slots on the connector, only 7 are being used. So, as I see it, I can change over to an 8 pin connector and leave one slot open or I am wondering if I can retrofit from the 6.3mm 9 pin connector to the 2.8mm 9 pin connector. But if I'm cutting wires and retrofitting I suppose I could go to a newer style sealed connector.

Anyway, anyone else tackled this issue?

Next question, on the rear of the junction panel I have a spare wire that I don't know what it's for. It's a green wire with a female elbow spade connector. It's similar to the connector that attaches to the regulator.

Thanks in advance.

You wont get an exact match connector so as you have to change both halves its entirely up to you how you do it, personaly i would use the largest spade you can to avoid resistance overheating

The spare wire is a spare.

Yes, you can drop to an 8-way plug. Or, use a 3-way and a 6-way and split the functions on both sides of the harness. Lots of possibilities.

Thanks for the info on the spare, that’s a relief. And I never even thought about splitting into more than one plug. That’s an excellent idea.

Thanks for confirming my suspicions about using the existing size spade. That’s a huge help!

The "spare" green wire goes to the 3 pin flasher used in different markets by the way
