Is copaslip ok as anti-seize for stainless fasteners?
« on: August 04, 2020, 12:27:12 PM »
To stop the galling\galvanic corrosion between stainless fasteners and aluminum or steel I have read here some people recommend a zinc based anti-seize.  I have Copaslip in my home shop and wondering if it works just as well even though it isn't zinc based.  I don't want to cheap out on something so simple and cause a nasty problem in the future.

Zink is better because it is a less precious metal and sacrifice itself.

I switched to Ceramic paste, because that is totally inert in that respect, unlike copper which still reacts between different metals.

I simply use blue Loctite.. I'm sure any antisleeze will work.

I contacted Alloy Boltz where I purchased the stainless bolt kits from and they said to use Z-24 threadlock.  I think that fits in pretty well with the information you all provided.

To me threadlock and antisieze are at opposite ends of the spectrum

I was thinking the same Bryan. Why would you want to make it harder to remove the screw or bolt from soft aluminum ?

First off, cast aluminum isn't all that soft, it's more brittle than say 3003 or 5052.   Second, you want to think of blue loctite as a quick setting removable cement. The good thing about it is that it seals the threads and actually acts as a lubricant when broken free.   I've been using it for years on SS screws without issue.   SS needs something to act as a lubricant for sure.  I've locked up SS nuts on SS bolts when getting lazy about applying some sort of thread stuff.

Thanks Maxheadflow, that is what the vendor that I used said.  I also checked with another fastener company about SS and aluminum and they endorsed the same product.  Good to know someone has been using this product for years without issue.
