Morris 7 spoke
« on: May 16, 2020, 09:12:21 AM »
I find these magnesium wheels challenge BobbyR's "Babe thread" just so we know how excited they make me! For a "senior" that's saying something. LOL

I have looked for a set in my sizes forever and always thought better. So now a set became available three hours from me (a friend had them squirreled away) and I actually know part of the history on these. 2.75"/3.5" exactly what I need. They are indeed 30+ years old, have not been crack tested. Price will reflect that.

A crack test is a must, but with wheels this age, how often should they be re-done? (my decision has been made)

So this is an unofficial poll from the guys with experience. YEAH OR NAY?

i have never owned any morris wheels but have had plenty of dymags and campags etc . i used to religiously crack test them every year . after about 10 years none had failed so i stopped and just used them .  the only ones that ever cracked were accident damaged and you didnt have to test them to see that.  these wheels were all 35 plus years old and i have about 15 sets. the official advice is get them tested every year though !

Thanks Simon, I just read an article that claimed Morris himself suggested checking very year.

I'm waiting on exact weights.

I would also like to know the answer to this as I have a set of magnesium Kimtabs that I would like to use.  Where could I have them tested?
If it works good, it looks good...

Many big motor machine shops have magnaflux testing setups...as far as locations for that kind of testing.

But the more I think about it you cannot magnaflux a magnesium wheel. It is non-magnetic.  You can penetrating dye test and x-ray them.

If you have white fuzz on a magnesium wheel it is oxidation and that means bad things. You can clean them up and then watch for oxidation formation after clean-up.  But only way to check for voids is through x-ray.

Correct, David. Also, to do a penetrating dye test for cracks, any paint must first be removed.

TG, my rim sizes are 2.5 front, 3.5 rear. I have one fresh set of Avons left 110/80 and 130/70 to use first.

I bought only one set of Conti 3CR, 100/90 and 130/80 to try. They better be good, because I hate that they are so much heavier, and that the rear is much taller as well.

I looked seriously at Pirelli and Michelin, and have hope Bridgestone will offer a better tread pattern and sizes in time. The Michelin and Bridestones available now are basically slicks with a slight cut tread, no use in the rain. The Pirelli, according to Ric, are good but wear as quickly as the Avons.

There will be no conclusions gathered this season!

They are not magnafluxing if  it's not magnetic.

Fair point. I wonder what process their equipment used? The job in the queue before mine was a genuine RR Merlin engine block. I suspect I took far more interest in that than anything else. Maybe they were x-raying them
