New member - 1976 cb750k
« on: June 16, 2020, 01:56:04 PM »
Hi All,

I recently bought a '76 cb750k that's a bit rough around the edges, but that I think will be a decent bike for toying around town with a little tinkering.  I had a cb750f back in the day and have been looking for a new project, so I'm really excited to get my new bike running better.

My first priority is to get the bike running well and safely, but I'm also thinking about the future direction I might go with the bike.  It's complete and original, except it has a 4 into 2 exhaust.  However, almost every part is rough, dinged up, or in need or repair.  The tank and right side cover has a nice patina, but the left side cover is cracked, missing a mounting tab, and warped.  At what point should I try to keep it original versus customize it?

Thanks, and I look forward to being part of the forums!

For now I'm going to leave it stock and repair the side cover as best as I can.  I know new side covers are available, but it would be difficult to match the original paint and I don't want to repaint the tank.  I'd like to keep it original, but forgot how big the turn signals and rear light assembly are, and boy it's a lot for a reproduction exhaust...

Welcome from NE MN,

Sounds like a bike to be ridden.  No need to worry about scratching a pristine paint job.

Here's the bike as I bought it, if I attached the pic correctly.  It looks really nice from 10 feet away.

I've already rebuilt the front caliper, adjusted the cables, and fixed the wiring for the lights.  I have parts ordered to rebuild the master cylinder and replace the pads, replace the flasher relay, and to replace the chain and sprockets.  It'll also need a new rear tire before it's ridden more than around the block.  And lots and lots of other little things....

Looks pretty god for a "ten footer"!

BTW - a lot of us no longer rebuild master cylinders,  the re-pops are just a little more than a rebuild kit.

I agree that looks like a nice find ,not something that's been totally neglected. One thing I noticed is if the seat is an original Honda and not a re-pop and if the buckle for the passenger grab strap is square then it likely from a 1971.
Enjoy the new toy ! and if you don't mind me asking what state are you from ?

The buckles are square.  It has the Honda logo on the back and the foam is a redish color as viewed through a tear on the back of the seat.  Is there a good source for identifying these sorts of year-by-year differences?

I'm in Alaska and bought the bike locally.

It looks good wyowill. That'll be a good rider. I have a 76 K also.
I've repaired a sidecover this winter. They are ABS so ABS cement is what to use to repair with fiberglass tape to strengthen the repair. Do thin layers of cement, 24 hrs between layers to off gas properly. This had a MIA bottom pin, so I found a donor cover, made a template to cut the donor piece out, sanded to fit close to fit, taped in place on the front of the cover, then started the layers. I put on 5 layers working each layer out a little further than the last. Also did layers on the face.

Thanks for the tips.  Mine is missing the bottom pin, too, has some weird wrinkling like it melted slightly, and has a crack.  I'll be happy for the time being if I can do something about the pin and crack, and keep it from getting worse.

This sounds like a good procedure, could you post some pictures somewhere on the forum?

I've got a couple of side covers, with cracks and all.

I tried...... But this forum has too small size limits..... My phone doesn't have a decent way to resize the pictures. This is my one beef about the forum. I have no problems on other forums I belong to. I've tried many times here and get the same results. I typed out this reply yesterday, added a few pictures, hit send and poof goes the reply.... This results gets old..... Someone needs to upgrade the site picture size limits to accept newer phone picture capabilities.
