Oh poop, not the carb
« on: May 20, 2020, 06:04:15 PM »
So I have been getting the motor buttoned you and I just could not get it to stay idling. I figured I should drop the carbs and have a look as #3 was leaking out there drain. After pulling I pulled off the bowls and discovered this. What is the solution to having the main jet tube rotted away. The other carbs look amazing. It’s just #4 that is thrashed. I have a band of CB500 carbs I rebuilt but thy are also rotted badly but not as bad as this one for my CB550. My thought was to clamp the carb in the mill and machine the tube down to the emulsion tube and then mill the of of the tube and make a replacement tube that will press on and the will take the jet. Right now there is nothing to even hold the jet in place. What’s your thoughts?

Get a replacement carb body is my thought.  While you have them split and really torn down replacing it get those emulsion tubes out and clean them also. You may be surprised how cruddy they are.

Yeah I ended up buying a new oem #4 old stock carb. But this has me wondering if anyone has fit a 550 nighthawk carb bank to a CB550. Thy look similar in size and look to be set up to for the same cc.

Same thing happened to me and I was able to find a couple of sets of old crappy carbs from a local mechanic for about $80 and I was able to Frankenstein a couple of sets. When I posted someone mentioned jbweld was an option, though it would probably fall apart quickly due to fuel.
