You might want to do some hangin' over at KZR.  It's kinda slower traffic than here, but guys would dig your projects.

Thanks Sean, I’ve got no complaints about Oink, everything he’s sent me has been cheap IMHO, but I use the bidnapper app so don’t have to worry about shill bidders, if thats true. The good thing about Ebay is if you think something’s too expensive, look around and you’ll likely find another similar item cheaper somewhere else.

I’ve paid a lot less for Kawasaki parts than CB750 parts which I always find amazing considering there are so many more 750’s around than Z1’s. He also packs everything really well, as opposed to that arsehole who sold me the head that he just threw in the box with no packing materials. The KZ1000 frame that ounk sold me for $120 was beautifully packed, and in magnificent condition, he probably spent an hour packing it, something I wouldn’t bother doing for $120 beans.

I guess in the end, I judge people on how they treat me, so I’m not interested in folks hanging sh1t on Oink, there’s two sides to every story, and my opinion is that if it wasn’t for him, I wouldn’t have my black Kawasaki finished, much less my Z1. ;D

I know one thing, lightweight drag rotors and  carriers DO NOT get  DISHED that way in an undamaged box.
 Ok maybe he did not notice.
 Now NOT RESPONDING  when I informed him, that is bad practice..
 I told him I will never bid on another without a pic of a straight edge against it..

 I had bought quite a bit off him before, and some since. .
BOTTOM LINE.... it was all good with the OINK..until it was'nt...

 It's just the way it is..
 I can usually tell with a disc in hand if it's dished... but anyone with a ruler or even   or even a sheet of fresh paper, or a measuring tape.....can  check a rotor.. but he doesnt..

So why keep giving him your money Frank? That sounds kinda hypocritic to me? That #$%* who threw the Z1 head in a box with no packing has fcuked me over because he accepted the return, but the USPS shipping label isn't accepted in Oz, so I'd have to pay $168 USD to send it back to him, and I'm stuck with it.

Oh well, I'll use the cams, springs, valves and whatever else came with it in my next build, but I left him negative feedback and publicly called him a crook, and I won't ever buy anything else from him. If I did, that would be a reflection on my own integrity.......... ;D

Anyway, back to the build. I picked up the bead blasted head and cylinder block and was pretty impressed at how clean they got them, there were still a few specs of black on the head, but nothing horrible, so I dumped them in the ultrasonic cleaner to flush away all the blasting grit.

I then used my dremel to clean any obvious bits off the head, while I repaired some busted fins on the cylinder block with JB weld's Steelfix epoxy, and dremeled/filed the new fins back into shape. I had to paint the cylinder block because the JB weld is black, so would have stood out like dogs balls. I was happy with the finished product though, as the high temp paint I used almost looks like bare blasted aluminium anyway. I gave the cylinders a light hone, not so much to repair any internal damage, but just to remove the light rusting caused from the ultrasonicleaner, and the clean water flush afterwards, before I dried the block in the industrial oven at 100 deg C for a couple of hours.

I think I mentioned in a previous post that the OD of the KZ1000 1100cc sleeves are 2mm larger than the Z1 sleeves, and I was concerned that they may not fit in the holes in the Z1 crankcase, but as luck would have it, they are still 1mm smaller than the holes. Thank God for that. I installed a new base gasket and cam chain idler wheel, and using my fancy home made piston blocks slid the well oiled sleeves over the Moriwaki pistons. My heart was in my mouth after my last effort where I broke two rings on the 1428 engine, but this time it was easy, especially because the Moriwaki pistons only have one compression ring, unlike any other 4 stroke engine I've dealt with. All pistons went in with no issues at all, and are a nice tight fit. I made sure they each went into their original bores, so I'm pretty confidant there'll be no compression issues.

Well with new two piece head gaskets in place, there was nothing for it but to install the head, woohoo! New copper washers installed along with the fancy OEM head nuts, and I torqued it down from an initial 10 foot pounds, to the recommended 30 foot pounds in 5 foot pound increments. Nothing went snap, everything looked good, so I celebrated by cracking a Ginger Joe.

Of course, when everything seems to be going right, something will always fcuk you over, that's Murphy's Law. I've become rather adept at setting the cam timing on these engines with all the work I've done on the 1428 engine, so it didn't take long to set the timing and bolt everything down. I'd already cranked the engine a few times before I set the timing and the engine turned over fine, so I was horrified when I tried to turn the engine over with the cam timing set, that the engine wouldn't budge? WTF? Was a valve hard up against a piston? I wouldn't have thought so, as the cams and the pistons came out of the dragbike engine, so as the Z1's combustion chambers are more cavernous, I couldn't understand why?

I loosened off the cams, removed the chain, cranked the engine over again, and it was fine? Weird. OK, so leaving the chain off, I reinstalled the exhaust cam, tightened it down, and tried to turn it using a 10mm ring spanner on one of the cam bolts, and couldn't budge it? Bugger! Now I think these cams are stock GPZ1100 cams which have a fair bit more lift than the stock Z1 cams that I don't have anyway, but regardless, they weren't binding in the other two heads I'd tried them in, so I wondered if maybe the Z1 cradles were slightly smaller? I had a lightbulb moment this morning and bolted two top cradles together around the bearing surface on the exhaust cam, and yep, I couldn't rotate it.

I took the cam into the garage, set it up in my lathe with one end in the chuck and the other end on a live centre, and spun it up while polishing the bearing surfaces with some fine emery cloth, followed by some wet and dry sandpaper with a little WD40. I then polished the bearing shells and the holders, bolted everything back together again, and all was good. No binding, and no slop either. Sweet. All going well I'll do the same on all four cam bearings and have the cams in and timed tonight. I must say, it is looking good......... ;D

Those two Kawasaki engine 'brothers' are getting good treatment while sitting on your bench Terry.I'm glad you were able to get that camshaft issue worked-out:what do you think was keeping it from spinning ?

Thanks Bill, they do make a handsome pair! I think it was just down to a little corrosion and/or crud under the bearing shells, a light scoring on the faces of the shells, and a little build up of crud on the bearing surfaces of the cam itself. I'll polish everything and lube it again tonight before I reassemble it, and it should be perfect. ;D

Thanks Bill, well I got back from physio where the beautiful Alice treated me to the VA funded weekly therapeutic massage, and happily loosened up I shoved the inlet cam into the lathe and gave it to the emery cloth/wet and dry abrasive paper and cutting fluid treatment, and was happy with the result.

I reinstalled the cams, set the timing and added the top cam chain guide.

I oiled everything up so there'd be no metal on metal contact, put a spanner on the ignition advance nut thingie and gave the engine a turn, and it was all good. Problem solved. I used some gasket sealant to install the new rubber end caps and reinstalled the cam cover to hold them in place until the sealant sets, and tomorrow I'll check the valve clearances.

I'm hoping they're all within tolerance but I'll bet they're not, which will be another pain in the arse, as I don't have any spare shims. I have a full Suzuki GS1000 shim kit from my Suzy days, but they're 29.5mm OD, whereas the Kawasaki items are only 29, so I'll have to give Jeff a call at Ace Motorcycles, and ask him if he's got some. Same/same for the ignition advancer, the one I'm using is off a Suzuki and the points cam is longer than the kawasaki item, so I'll have to get the correct one, even if I steal the one from the 1428 engine for the time being.

Anyway, the engine is pretty much all finished now, so I can start building a bike around it, happy days! ;D

Thanks Sean, there are a few guys on the KZ forums who are apparently, with no major issues. I'll run an oil cooler, and probably won't do too much commuting. I asked Per how his 750 with the MJR 1000cc big bloke goes and he says he has no problems, so I reckon it'll be fine. ;D

That's gonna be quite a ride!  I was just doing some testing on my kz1000 yesterday which is just a measly 1080 with Andrews 2x cams, ported head and vm29 smoothies and I will be damned if it won't put the spank on my gs1100 16 valve.  So, if your parts combo, is even half right, that thing should be some scary fun!

Thanks Sean, yep, it should be a beast. I'm just waiting on an APE top cam chain idler assembly rather than the crappy setup the PO had bodged up, and I'll be modding the pistons to drop them down from 13.5:1 to around 10.5:1, so I can run it on 98 Ron pump fuel, and the starter motor will (hopefully) turn it over. The Z1 has 1100cc high comp Moriwaki pistons, ported head and GPZ1100 cams, so with the 33mm smoothbore carbs, Delkevic pipe and Dyna S ignition and coils, should get down the road pretty good too. ;D

Thanks Bill, I did a bit of research and found a set of 1428 pistons that were 10.5:1 and they looked exactly like mine except that the high domes were missing. I had a look at the APE sight and saw that the domes of the pistons need to be a minimum of 4mm thick, so I measured mine, and less the domes, the crowns were still 8mm thick, less a couple of mm for the valve cutaways. My plan is to machine up an 83.5mm Holder in my lathe so I can chuck them in nice and tight, and machine off most of the dome sections of each piston, then weigh them, and if they're within 5 grams of each other, that's good enough.

By doing this, I can get rid of my home made spacer plate, and use APE's top cam chain guide. I may lose a little BHP, but it should make it easier for the electric starter to crank the engine over, run a little cooler, and be happier on pump gas. Being the eternal optimist that I am, I can't forsee any disasters, but who knows? I'm sure there'll be a plethora of unqualified opinions forthcoming (and not just mine) but I won't know until I try it. ;D

Well it's been a day. I realised last night that I didn't have an ignition advancer for the Z1, the Suzuki one I had doesn't fit behind the points cover and I wasn't sure if the ignition timing was the same anyway, so I put out a plea on FB. The first reply was "you can buy a new one from Z1 Spares" so I checked it out, and it was $275.00 for an aftermarket one, which is probably fair, but more than I wanted to pay. My newest best friend, John Clifton (also from Melbourne) said he'd send me one for $40 including postage, so I asked him to send it to me express post, and added another 10 bucks for his trouble. I sneaked out from my "working from home" workstation at lunch time and checked my valve clearances and found that all but one were good enough, so I got back to John, and he's sending me a couple for a very reasonable price.

Not having much to do while I'm waiting, I thought I'd see if the Mikuni 33mm smoothbore carbs I bought a few months ago fit. I bought new rubber inlets from another Zed/Zee owner on Facebook as the ones on the head were old and cracked, and was happy that they fit, so with a little vaseline, I shoved the carbs on, and the new pod filters, and was happy.

Now as you all know, I drink too much. There's nothing wrong with that of course, and it helps my 14-odd tablets that I take each evening go down nicely. One of the less than acceptable (according to the wife/hand brake) is that I tend to bid/buy/offer to buy things that I don't need. A couple of days ago a bike dealer a couple of states over advertised a very rough CB750F2 for $2500. after he had no takers, I offered $2000 if he included freight to my place. Things must be a bit tight at the moment with Covid-19 etc, so was surprised this morning when he said he's take my deal.

I sent him $1650, and I have to pay the delivery guy $350 when the bike arrives, which probably won't be until next payday, which suits me fine. Why an F2? Well as fragile as they were, I have a soft spot for them, having owned a couple over the years. I also have quite the pile of F2 parts laying around, including most of a professionally reconditioned engine that I bought in canberra, and a box of parts that Cliff (Maduncle here) gave me many years ago, so I should have enough bits to make a rough daily rider out of it, apart from tyres, brake pads etc, and generate some bucks while I'm at it, or maybe just keep it. We'll see. Should be fun........... ;D

You might be right about him struggling a bit. He's got a #$%* load of bikes stuck on the west coast of the US. Including mine. ;D
