Topic: Clutch disc assembly question

Hi, I have a 1976 cb 750 Supersport. I cannot find anywhere what the correct “disc recipe” is. I have six friction discs that are the same size, and one that is slightly larger that I put on first ( closest to the bike) . The metal Toothed plates that go in between are all the same except for one that is basically doubled with kind of a rivets pattern in it. This is in the middle of the pack. When I started the bike after assembly it made a god awful noise and stopped. Is the godawful noise due to me using the incorrect disc make-up, or is it something else? In other words, did I assemble it correctly? I just can’t find anywhere where it tells me exactly what I need and in what order. Please help

Using the double metal disc is dependant on which basket you use, earlier or late. Unless your bike was one of the last few 76 F's made it did not come with the double disc. The clutch had this upgrade in 77/78. The original basket would not be deep enough to use the double disc along with the 7 discs. One disc would have to be removed. You would need a 77/78 basket which is slightly deeper. This would also necessitate using a later (77-78) clutch cover or rigging what your's probably came with. Adding the double disc with the earlier basket and clutch cover would create some serious binding. I have done this. The double disc from a 75 - 79 GL was sometimes used in the "field fix" to quieten the clutch rattle but that required the removal of one of the other discs to compensate for the extra thickness. Perhaps search for the "clutch field fix" to better understand.

Jerry, thanks. So I don’t use the double disc. Do I also use 6 same sized friction discs with the slightly larger Seventh one innermost? And six small metal plates in between each of these?

Jerry, I put it back together without the double disc. The largest friction place is resting closest to the outside of the bike. Then there are 6 more same sized friction discs, and 6 metal plates. Is that right? I guessing I don’t have the deeper clutch case I would need for the double disc set up....thanks in advance for your help. Jim
