'76 750K oil pan removal
« on: May 25, 2020, 01:28:52 PM »
I changed the oil in my bikes today and on the '76 750K when I went to snyg down the oil pan bolt I felt it start to give.  I ordered a used oil pan one off fleabay.  I seem to remember being able to remove the oli pan without much trouble but this was 40 years ago and I can't remember if the exhaust has to be moved.  Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Simple exercise - just remove the 10 or so bolts that hold the pan on and lower it down. It might be stuck by the gasket though.
You may have to remove the exhaust to get clear access depending on what system you have fitted.

A new oil pan won’t help you though? A longer bolt might do for a while, but a helicoil into the case, would be a better long term solution. I use a tiny 1/4” ratchet on all M6 bolts for that very reason. It’s less than half size of a 1/2” drive ratchet.

I have Delkevic 4 into 1 systems and Honda 341 4-4 system on my bikes. Neither type requires removal of exhaust to remove the oil pan.

I think the OP is meaning that the drain plug bolt was over tightened resulting in the pan cracking around the threaded area, a common problem when over tightening the drain bolt. If that is the case then you need a welder or a new pan.

Ah gotcha. Thanks for clearing that up JT.

Btw I’ve helicoiled the pan drain hole before as well. Hasn’t leaked so far. 😊

Thank you  all for the responses.  disco, I have the stock 4-4 exhaust.  Glad to hear I don't have to remove the exhaust.

You can tap threads for a larger drain plug bolt also, right?

I busted my oil pan, one time, long ago, on my K0? It wasn't the threads that stripped. The boss that holds the threads cracked, it was welded and still leaked. I had to swap the pan a couple times and ended up with a new pan. I don't remember pulling the stock pipes. It's a pain working there without a lift.

Don't forget the crush washer.

I would be reluctant to enlarge the hole and re-tap it as part of the threads are in a bolstered semicircle and that would become quite thin if the hole was enlarged.  Since these oil pans are pretty cheap I opted to just get one off e-bay.  The threads on the one I ordered look pretty good but until it is in hand I won't know for sure.

Yeah, I replaced the pan on my K3 when I did the same thing myself many years ago, PO must have overtightened mine too often as well. I saved the pan with the stripped threads to repair... someday.
