Ordering from David Silver Spares to US
« on: January 26, 2007, 03:57:50 PM »
Sent email to David Silver for a right hand control (Start/Kill switch) for the 500T. They have it. Not a one in US. Price is the same as what a POS one sold for yesterday on ebay (even at 1.98 exchange). Has anyone had experience regarding shipping cost and duties. Don't want a $58 part to cost $100 with shipping. Thanks

A few years ago I ordered a couple of things from them on a Mon. and had them in hand on Fri. the same week. It was a small order...a gasket and I don't remember what else but it came in an envelope with bubble wrap lining. It came by  postage so the shipping cost was minimal and there wasn't any duty. They should be able to give you a total cost before you purchase.

I second that.  I bought camchain tensioner blades from them a year or two ago, and the shipping cost was minimal.  I would imagine your switch wouldn't weigh much more, so you shouldn't be looking at much for shipping costs.

Third that.  I bought sidies for my f2.  Shipping was minimal...  covers were expensive, however.

I've bought parts from David Silver dozens of times and never had any problems with shipping.  In fact, they get here quicker and cheaper than any domestic supplier I've bought from.

I buy 80% from David Silver & 20% from CMSL.

Shipping from either is great. Never paid customs yet. Ask them to mark "Vintage Motorcycle Spares" on the customs form.

If you get caught for customs I think its 8% plus the post office will charge for collecting it. I would happily buy from DSS for you and post on calling it second hand and only worth $5 BUT i have to pay a 17.5% tax plus shipping to me so is it worth it?

I don't really think there is any duty on small parts.

Is that why all the packages I get from DSS have something like "Small Packet" stamped on them?

Nope "small packet" is a British Post Ofiice costing designation

There's a minimum value that gets the import tax.  I'm not sure what that value is.  My Carbtune was $104 delivered and didn't get hit with any taxes.

In Spain, anything over 50 euro -included postage- is subject to taxes. BUT, it is impossible to stop every parcel that exceeds that value. I have had to pay taxes only twice: once that the seller sent me a seat and insured the box -a hint of value- and another one that the seller didn't fill out the customs form - I had to go to the office and show proof of value-. Another I received a box opened and closed with sticky tape from the spanish IRS. My guess was that the box was from a car rack and looked new, while the form stated "motorcycle used parts". I guess they opened it for inspection, and when they saw the handlebars they just close it and searched another one.

I believe they focuse in electronics: computers, audio etc. It costs the same time to fill the paperwork, while the taxes are much higher the higher the cost of the article.
