Anyone know of a Fast Throttle that works on CB550
« on: May 28, 2020, 08:47:23 PM »
Hello all....well I don't know about you but I am fed up with needing to grab two handfuls to get the throttle to engage before Dash really wants to get moving.  Does anyone use a fast throttle and, if so, which one would work on my CB550?  When I ride my Suzuki the throttle is so responsive I have gotten a tad bit spoiled and want Dash to enjoy the ease of quick acceleration  ;).  Any ideas are welcomed!
thank you

If you're willing to replace the whole thing and not just the tube look at Domino. Excellent bit of kit but a little spendy. If you want just the tube try one from an R6 Yamaha from Motion Pro.
All you gotta do is do what you gotta do.

Hi Lisa! You may be able to fit a throttle tube with a larger diameter, uh, part the cable wraps around, into your stock housing. A quicker throttle will also be harder to turn.
Don't fix it if it ain't broke!

You can easily modify your throttle housing you have. I was looking for my post on it but couldn’t find it. Take some plastic, maybe 2mm thick, and heat it and wrap it around the throttle where the cables go and super glue it in place. That’s it. That’s why some throttles are quicker than others. You’ll have to experiment with the thickness of the plastic because that determines how quick the throttle. Just note that a quicker throttle is harder to twist. Just the nature of leverage. I prefer this method to buying an already made one because you can adjust it to your exact liking.

Edit: Try PVC tube since it’s already in that shape. You’ll probably need to sand it down thinner. Also you’ll want to taper the ends so the cables ramp up it.

I had a guy bring me a quick throttle kit for a CB750. It had a replacement smaller throttle wheel for the carb stack. When he got my price to install it - requiring complete dismantling of the stack and the throttle rod assembly (a nasty job as Keihin did not design it to come apart so one or two sunken pins axially locating the rod have to be somehow pulled out), getting the small wheel in place, reassembling the rod and stack, bending the cable mounts to point at the smaller wheel, and then a carb sync... he declined to have it done.

My stock CB750 K6 carbs had a horrible hard spring. I found a nicer version at Webike, not cheap.
My Mikuni flatslide carbs have too short twist. Full throttle in just under 1/4 turn is too quick, especially on 1st gear when taking off.
The other gears have killed my rear tire. Around 5000km life.

Steady hand not twisting too much to avoid  jerky ride. Sneeze and a wheelie!! :D

I had the same issue with the Webers; the initial opening was too fast, so I cut the bottom of the groove in the tube into a more progressive "ramp".

Faster throttle is harder to turn with the same return spring. You may want to try a softer spring like PeWe?

Ugh this is becoming more complicated than I wanted it to be.  You would think in the 21st century there would be a "plug and play" option...LOL
SO does everyone just basically deal with the fistful throttle twists?  ;)

Maybe you are giving too much throttle and its having trouble revving up due to too much throttle.
Try opening less bad increasing when the revs start climbing.
A torquier bike will feel like what you said, and other motors may not do that..  like Dash..

OK, smaller diameter like gearing down with front sprocket.
I let my Demel to eat some white nylon in the first half part of the pull side (front), not much difference. It grinded quick!!

Hopefully an improvement. I did not grind the hole for "wire end button" oval making it closer to the bar.
The other way adding material might give a bigger difference.

Return springs must be easier to find where selling standard springs for small money.

My TMR carbs have a very light action and very snappy return.

How throttle cables are routed more important with weaker spring. Let go of the grip, spring should return throttles to idle or at least very near.

The Domino kit from Revival Cycles is the one I picked up to use on my race bike. The motion pro would achieve the same thing I'm sure.

Hi Mooshie....I've found that if I rotate my throttle hand up and forward before giving throttle, I can then get full throttle with just one twist.
