Phase 2 - Blue Blaster
« on: May 29, 2020, 10:02:13 AM »
Hey All.   I've been hovering for a while in the background.  Began on Phase 2 of my 750F1.  It's been running great, but I have gotten an itch to build it the way I always intended.  This will not be a detailed build, but I will try to post pics and updates as the build progresses.

Blackfin5 aka Kevin, right?

Nice restomod upgrade and color change.  What other mods do you have planned?

It would not be a bad idea to have a shop specializing in suspension check on your springs, sag, preload, rebound, dampening etc. once your bike is ready to go back on the road.  There will probably be some differences between your 750F1 and the bike from the donor in weight.

Hey Don.  Long time.  With the courts closed, may be a good time to drive down for a ride.  I still have the two 550s.

Damn courts are back open! I'd have to go with one of my modern bikes since my clutch is apart. (We've been working on a hydraulic clutch for the 550, but we need to figure out the right slave throw).

I'm waiting for local shop to mount tires on new 18" Excels - 110/80 and 130/70 on 2.5 front and 3.5 rear respectfully.  It's a bit overkill, but have Ohlin internals for the GXSR front end.  Calculated trail and got a very nice 45mm triple tree set from Devin. It should work out to be within a few mm of stock, so can perhaps drop the tubes a wee bit or get longer rear shocks.
Rear is currently Ikon, but will be looking at some other options.

Just installed new 3.0 Ohm coils for the Dyna 2K I am putting in.

I'm going to ride it for a few weeks, then the head is going to Mr. Rieck for a Stage 3, or maybe even a 4.  Finally decided on a 915 kit (JE) with new sleeves, and likely CR 31 carbs.  APE will get the crank.  Haven't decided on the cam yet.  Only mountain roads here.

Seat mounting platform fashioned from a piece of Starboard from a boat project.  Copied a bit from DCC.  I can pop off the new seat with a couple wing nuts and have access to the Dyna 2000 and the battery terminals.

Coils in and Dyna 2000 mounted to battery box.  Got an under seat tray from Cognito, but since not going with a Motogadget unit, I'll save the tray for something later.  Trigger plate in and ready for static timing.  Advance curve #4.

Electrical is sorted out; new LED flashers.  Carbs on the bench.  Controls mounted on new clip-on bars.  Still waiting for Sport Demons to be mounted on the polished Excel rims.  The last thing I am expecting are the Brembo front calipers to arrive: and front fender and assorted small items to come back from powder coat.  Sorry about the sideways pic...it is right side up in my photos file.
Cheers.

Not much to report.  Only aesthetics.  Have new flashers and taillight permanently mounted and wired.  Installed the Meyer front fender back from powdercoat.  And found a flyscreen that I liked on another build (needs gloss black paint). Waiting for front Brembos.  I will order a set of Works shocks after wheels are on and I can measure rake to know the proper length of the shocks to set up the trail I want.  Then finished, for now.

Still waiting on:  Pirellis to be mounted, my carbs, and new 5 3/4" LED  headlight to fit into headlight fairing.  And waiting....

I guess it's a mass COVID-19 delay.

Spacer kit for the front wheel or for the calipers to fit a larger rotor?  Are those Showa with an Ohlins kit?

For the calipers, kit 6117.  OEM 2006 GSX 750R tubes, with Ohlins internals.  The rotors are 310mm.  The Brembos are M4 108mm.

Spacers were waiting in the post from Power Barn.  The M4s are overkill, so I may find an adaptor to switch them with the smaller Brembos on my Duc.

While waiting for my wheels and carbs for the F1, I installed a NHK damper and tube clamps on the 550.  It got a little twitchy on the marbles so I thought it would be a good idea.  With a 100/80-18 in front and 13.35" Ikons, the trail is down to about 94 to 95mm.

I can't believe my local shop is taking so long to true spokes and mount tires.

In the meantime, I mounted a Brembo RCS 19mm brake lever and master cylinder to replace my Nissin 5/8.  I think it will compliment the M4s nicely.  Again, probably way overkill but I love Brembo bling.  Waiting for s.s. hoses and a Rizoma reservoir.

On the other side, I have a Brembo mechanical clutch lever to match and waiting for a GSXR perch to mount it in.  Both levers are the folding type.

The 19RCS should work better than great.  I had one on my RC51 and it provided excellent feel.

Thanks for the insight, Don.  I briefly rode a Duc 999 that had one with P4/34 calibers and loved the feel, especially going hot into corners.  Putting this same combo on my Sport 1000 too.

Don, just curious, did you prefer the 18 or 20 configuration for street riding?

For street riding, I used the 18 setting.  Granted, the RC51 has really great stock brakes.  The 18 setting had more power and much better feel than the RC51's stock set up.

Little is happening and I am stalled out waiting for carbs and tires mounted on Excel rims.

I have a K&S left side bar switch so I can separately mount a GSXR clutch perch for the Brembo lever.  I also installed new blue s.s. brake hoses from Spiegler.

Miracles  do happen...at least for my front wheel.  My shop, which is usually great, still needs to mount rear.  Turns out there is a COVID issue with the owner's child.

And still waiting for carbs and 4-2-1 motogp s.s. exhaust to be polished up.

Happy 4th.
