How it Works, Honda Mechanical Disc Brake Caliper.
« on: May 30, 2020, 12:35:36 PM »
If you were wondering about these, they were used on some smaller models, like the 200 twin and others.
I took one apart, got a few pics. Will try to explain it a bit.

I'd been spending some time on  the Twins forum and read some about them but saw no good photos or read any theory of operation.

In the first pic cable has been disconnected, would  below where it is in the pic inside that caliper half.
There us about a 10 mm slot in the main part of the caliper, it's where the disc travels..the main hole is above and below this, the stationary  paid sits in the lower blind hole. The other hole is where the sliding pad is doing the work. Sliding back and forth in about a 19mm long section of the hole.
The plastic part pushes against the second half of caliper, a lot of the mechanism  is inside that half.
The actuator, is pulled by the cable, it is a lot like the clutch lifter on a 750, 3 balls and ramps.
Between this and the plastic section three is a thrust bearing, to smooth out the action of things moving..

Frank,How does the area underneath that white plastic disc look ? There is a threaded center 'screw' of sorts that self adjusts, which that white plastic disc fits into the end.

I think that was good it's in a bag right now .
I have added a pic I took off the net, to show the central bore that the sliding pad rides in.

Sounds like a slick bit of engineering. I have heard that these weren't very powerful brakes though. I wonder how much improvement can be made with different rotor material and better pads? Duals?

I don't know if you can get pads, and I doubt there is much if any choice.

Oh one other thing, I sort of liked..
The stationary pad has a pin on the back similar to the others, but no cotter.
There is a rubber grommet in there, the pin just pushes in, a bit snug. Pad has the small bump on the back to let  it swivel..

I have a set of Lincoln mark V rear disc brakes going on a 9" ford rear end. The E brake is built in to the caliper and that's how they work. GM had some like that on the big front wheel drive cars too.
