CB550 Emulsifier Tube/Gas Mileage Mod?
« on: May 30, 2020, 06:28:32 AM »
I was reading the FAQ on the main page and it mentions the mod for the emulsifier tube to get better gas mileage.  I'm assuming they are talking about the "needle jet holder" (see https://www.ebay.com/itm/Reproduction-Needle-Jet-Holder-Honda-CB550K-1977-1978-16165-383-701-/172509927101)?

Has anyone tried this?  Did it work OK without having to retune?  I would be interested in this simple if its literally a matter of removing the main jet and the holder and drilling a few small holes to get an extra 10MPG increase.

I am wondering if the earlier CB500/CB550 models had these pushed in.  On my 78 CB550K the jet holder is threaded in.  So I want to be sure if this mod even changes anything on a later model before I would waste the time on it.

Don't. Most probably it'll be a waste of time. I have read about the idea multiple times, but sofar I've not heard from anybody: Wow, what an improvement this is! Also realise that the K3/4 models were already very lean indeed (EPA) and were - as a matter of fact - often criticised for this.

Yes they had.

Yeah, I figured if it was something I was going to try it would be with getting some extra needle jet holders that way if I don't like it I could go back.  Sounds more of a myth than reality.  But yes, if they were jetted to lean letting it breath a tiny bit more would be good for it.
