Floor Talk
« on: September 05, 2025, 01:33:38 PM »
I started pulling up the old 20 year old matting on my garage floor.  I was pretty well worn out by time I got all of the bikes I am not riding enough rolled out.  I did find a ton of dirt, some mold, and a number of various insects which I am sure a few date back to the Jurassic period.  The spring project is going to be all new cabinets and shelving and either epoxy or a good floor paint.  The matting has held up well but has worn in several high traffic areas and wrinkled badly from temperature change.

I had some left-over vinyl on the floor under the bikes to eliminate dampness but you can't scoot a bike sideways on a center stand and that's what I needed to do. I pulled it up and it too was stuck in a couple spots.

My nephew had epoxy applied to his garage floor, it was cracked and settled in a corner, it appears flat and new now. I have a spot where the re-bar was close to the surface and salt has corroded it causing the floor to pop. I'm wondering what they can do here, mine really needs a trench drain, it's attached and the cars melt off in winter.

I went with the professional epoxy floor 12 years ago when I built the shop. Then tried the stuff from Menard's in the regular car garage, but that didn't do well with the WI road salt. Then had the pros do it where they grind off the top of the floor to give the epoxy something to bite too. Looks great and all cracks closed and have not opened up since I did it 5 years ago. The shop is much more crowded now than the pic shows...LOL

Having a new garage built in the spring and have been looking into floor coatings. Basically 3 types of materials that can be applied. I read the epoxy yellows with age and sunlight and is more brittle than Polyaspartic. Read one article with a video using an epoxy priming than coating with the Polyaspartic....they insisted it was the best method. Than there is Polyurea. Confusing with all the options.

My good friend just built a 1200sf barn [metal bldg] on his ranch, had the floor coated with epoxy like his other barns.  The others have held up real well over the years, he used the same guy, was $3.70/sq ft.
It's basically a 3 part process: 1. scrub concrete clean  2. paint the two part epoxy base color/apply flakes 3. seal it the next day.
We'll be moving cars and bikes into it this week....

I had my 550 sq ft garage done this summer. Polyaspartic after grinding and epoxy base. 2 day process. Dries for walking in about 48 hours. The real #$%* was clearing it out and stashing everything. I borrowed a trailer for 3 bikes and misc. Shop equipment outside under a tarp. New car and 2 bikes taken to my daughter's place a mile away. Looks great. I interviewed 4 or 5 shops. All pretty similar in price for my area ~ $6/ft. Half priced too as I threw in a week at my condo. It is not as brittle as an epoxy top coat. Very nice upgrade but now I feel compelled to do finishing on the drywall portion.

That's exactly why I want it coated when it is built.🤣 Once you fill it it is a PITA!

Which is why I'll probably never do mine.  Although I've thought about being lazy and just doing the middle.

That pesky Corvette has been in the way a lot over the last year.  It would be great to have a shop that didn't also double as car storage. ;D

I think I've just found something that makes me feel better about the garage floor's cracks.
The 350F I'm working on piddled a bunch of trapped oil, about 4 ounces, onto the floor while I was working on something else.
The bike was sitting over the big crack.
It all went into the crack!

I feel SO much better. :D
