CR836 update and "OH what a good weekend".
« on: February 12, 2007, 06:12:10 PM »
Well guys, allthough nearly a year behind scedule, the CRs new motor is installed and ready for testing.
We were held up for several months waiting for special one off valves to be made.
We should have had the head back along with the valves when the guy doing it told us we would'nt get the valves untill Feb 06.
Mike Rieck to the rescue. Mike managed to get us a set of 5mm stemmed stainless valves with 2mm larger heads on the inlets.
Allthough thanks to Mike we had every thing in place for the re-build, we had missed our spot with the engine builder and had to run the stock 736 motor for another year.
If we get any decent weather this weekend, it should be up and running.
We will take photos and get them posted as soon as posible.

Last weekend turned out to be a cracker for the team untill this morning.
It started with me going to a funeral on Friday and spending 12hours and £40 ($80) on booze in one of the local pubs. (yes my head did hurt Saturday morning ;D ;D ;D)
Saturday night saw us at one of the clubs we race with, The National Sprint Associations anual dinner and prize presentation.
Chris picked up several certificates for class wins and the overall title of Northern Sprint Champion (in his class) for the fourth year running. It was also confirmed by the clubs Chairman that he had also taken the Southern championship for the second time.
This year I am starting on a program of testing a new 175cc motor to attack International records later this year or in 2008.
The motor had been completed a few days earlier and I had arranged to collect it from the builder at the prize presentation.
I was expecting the cost to be in the region of £800 ($1,600), but got a nice supprise when I was handed the bill for £250 ($500).
The gentleman in question was Mr Ron Phillips of Fahron Engineering, he asked could he be involved in the project and said he was prepaired to only charge me the cost price for the parts fitted in exchange for addvertizing on the bike and the team clothing and he would also foot the bill for that.
He has also offered a full technical back up and will be available at all test sesions.
The cylinder for this motor has been devloped by the 2 stroke department at Queens University Belfast and has allready undergone extencive testing and utilises a stock HRC piston from another Honda model.
I thought, what a great weekend but this morning, "Oh #$%*" I had started work on the chasis and found it had some very cleverly
dissguised cracks in both frame and swing arm >:( >:( >:( >:(
I have tonight allready put out feelers for their replacment.
Just when you thought it was all going fine :o :o :o :o :o

But I'm still smiling,

Sam ;D ;D ;D ;D   ;)

First...thanks for the acknowledgment Sam. My good friend Dana Johnson (trusted machinist) deserves most of the credit for the valve kit. He has a good friendship with one of the top men at Kibblewhite which got that custom ball rolling. I'd say the positive news outweighs the bad overall. Sounds good on the future engine front as well. I'm very happy for you and Chris. Cheers sir! Happy to be of service. Mention me when you really start to set records. ;D

Well Sam, aside from your bad news it sounds like you had a very good weekend indeed...far better than mine anyway. ;) Thanks for keeping us updated and please continue to do so...don't forget pics whenever possible. :)

Hi Dave, I can't tell you a great deal about it but this particular cylinder had been designed for a none motorcycle aplication but it is hoped it will work well for what I want to achieve.
Fahron Racing that I will be racing under have in the past done a lot of development work for Queens.
Ron Phillips has been involved and at the top of 2 stroke tuning for a very long time and specialises in cylinder liners.
Normaly, these cylinders made by HRC have a ceramic liner that is very dificult to remove if you want to overbore the motor.
To be honest, I am not sure if this one has been overbored and replated or if it has a cast iron liner, but going off the break in instructions I would guess at the former.
I have been a mate of Rons for about 17 years and have come to trust him, if he says it will work then it's good enough for me. ;)
Perhaps Mike can shed more light on the subject as the liners in his Busa are the same ceramic coating, at least I think they are,..how about it Mike.

Great stuff Sam, what’s the closest pace to the NW you race at, if it’s not to far I might pop over on my 400.

Dave, the nearest is Elvington near York, if you don't want to ride that far you can come with us.
You can leave your 400 in my workshop, it's secure enough to repell an army of scousers ;D ;D ;D ;D

Basically it is great. The aluminum bore results in much better heat transfer rate. Suzuki and Kawasaki I know apply ot as a coating. Late model Honda CBR600"s actually have the aluminum impregnated with the nickel silicone carbide material (or whatever Honda is using...has to be close). It is very tough stuff. Forget trying to hone it unless you have diamond hones. Here's a real popular company the bores and replates.  http://www.mt-llc.com/index_home.shtml

Thanks Mike, that's the stuff, nickasil for short.

Ron Phillips at Fahron Engineering is experimenting with a scrap cylinder to see how large it can be taken.
At the moment it is only out to 134cc, just 10cc up,..it would be nice if he could get the full 50cc, taking it to 172.6cc
It would mean taking 9.5mm out and allthough it is only just under 5mm all round, it would take it very close to the transfer ports and water jacket.
We'll just have to be content for the moment and see how it performs.

All this high-tech stuff is new to me Sam.   I read the companies info and gather the main benefit in going this route is to reduce heat build-up in the highly stressed, high rpm engine?  Not a lot on longevity, but I quess thats not a big concern, considering you only plan on taking the bike out for a few 1/4 mile drives. ;) :)

That's about it Dave, the piston ring is changed after 125 miles, the piston at 250 miles, crank at 500 and the cylinder at 1000 mile.

Even useing new genuine HRC parts, no parts that break are under warranty, ya pay ya money and take ya chance >:( >:( >:(

Oh and another thing Dave, ya don't have all the problems trying to set the carburation up that ya do with these big fours, it only has one carb ;D ;D (but it's a bloody big barsteward)

You do however need a weather station costing $1600 and a laptop to keep on top of the ignition ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

We pulled the CR out Saturday afternoon when Chris had finished work, but we were delayed a little further waiting for another mate, Paul to turn up.
We needed three people to carry out what we wanted to do.
The bike having no electric or kick starter has to be fired up on a roller system. The bike sits on one end of the rollers while the other end is under the rear wheel of our van. We needed one to drive the van (me) one to opperate the bikes controls (Chris) and Paul to opperate the strobe light to check the timing.
We turned the motor for a few minutes with no ignition to ensure the oil was getting all around the motor, then we wanted to check the timing with the strobe before it's first fire up.
After a lot of messing, trying to find where our sparks had gone we returned the bike to the workshop.
We wondered about the battery, had Chris charged it enough, was it holding it's charge ?
I disconected the battery to test it,..it was OK. The next easy thing to check before trying to locate a multimeter was the first thing from the battery, the ignition switch.
I turned it on, flicked the conector that Chris had conected, and I had just disconected and everything was working.(must make mental note..not to let Chris near battery conections  ;D ;D ;D ;D)
By this time the light was failing and we deceided to leave it untill next Satuday.

On the Sunday morning, I turned my attentions to my own problem with my cracked RS frame.
I had put a frame wanted add on a web site that specialises in RSs and got an answer quite quick frome a place in NZ.
I had also come across a guy not to far from where I live, with lots of second hand stuff for sale.
I phoned him and arranged to go see him at 9.30 Sunday morning.
It was an hours drive and just under 60 miles, the sun was shining (for once) and the roads were clear, turned into a pleasant drive.
It turned out when I met the guy (Mark) he was the father of Neil Hodgson, ex World Superbike Champion.
He fixed me up with a frame like new and a load of other parts that I thought would improve the looks of the bike.
A most enjoyable Sunday morning was rounded of with a few pints and Sunday lunch in the local. ;D ;D ;D ;D
