Engine serial number?
« on: June 12, 2020, 10:59:24 AM »
Those of you with knowledge of serial numbers, what do you make of this engine serial number? The engine is on a 1970 CB750 frame. The first 2 looks like it’s been over stamped with an X. Just looks fishy to me.

Thats not original Honda stamping,;probably replacement cases due to chain breakage stamped by whoever fitted the cases

If you look real close, an X is stamped over the 2 making it look like an 8. From what I understand, the serial number could be accurate for a 1979 bike except for that X.

Restamps and errors have been seen on engines back when they were new. I think Hondaman had one. In this example I'd guess it is a replacement engine case.

Well it looked a lot like a SOHC 750 case which was only built to 1978, and by then some had serial pad in another location.  What frame was it in , you mention 70, does it have the data tag ?  Seat lock or latch ? 70 frame does not have seat lock.
