The slugs that I'd seen back in the day were essentially pieces of fork tube with a male end like the cap nut, which screwed into the top of the fork tube, and a female end then to receive the displaced cap nut. As long as the seam was between the 2 clamps, one might think them safe. Scared me from the get go. And either they were too expensive or to liable, I don't know, they never caught on and besides a few pair i saw 35+ years ago, have never seen or heard of them again.. Could be made by a machine shop I suppose.
