Differences In Design - CB550 Airbox vs. CB750 Airbox?
« on: June 27, 2020, 06:27:56 AM »
I've been working on a new 3D print for a replacement airbox for the CB500/550 for those who are having trouble finding the original. As I have thought about the design, it struck me that the CB750 design is significantly different. The single bread-box of the CB750 is a much simpler design and the boots of the CB750 are shaped as velocity stacks. I started to think about working on a modified CB550 plenum in the fashion of the CB750 airbox.

I was curious if anyone has more direct insight as to why Honda made the decision to design the CB550's airbox in the way they did. I could see how space may be a concern on the CB550 with it's vertical block, but even the difference in carb boots strikes me as an interesting difference.

Outer carb boots are angled inwards presumably for air flow because of narrower frame

Since the filter and plenum are separate on the 500/550 but a single unit in the 750 I am not sure how that would work. But anyone that has ever wrestled the 500/550 setup into place would likely be grateful if you could create a version of the 750's easily installed box.
