‘Crunchy’ feeling on forks
« on: June 22, 2020, 05:00:48 PM »
OK, so I replaced my front fork seals, put in what I believe is the correct amount of fork oil, and reinstalled it on the bike. I put everything back together correctly, but when I hold the front brake and push down on the front end it makes a kind of crunching noise on the way back up. I thought it was maybe the spring or something. Is this normal?

Should not make noise so not normal. Did it do it before the new seals ? Do the springs pull out of the fork legs easily and drop back in under their own weight ? I had a K5 where the front fork tube was not really visually bent to the eye but enought to where the spring would bind.
On the other hand are you sure the noise is coming from the forks and not maybe the caliper or some other part rattling ?

Did a little bit of dirt get in between the forks and sliders ?

i did not notice the noise prior to the seals replacement.
Springs easily come out and drop in
Not sure about the binding fork tube. I’ll check
I’ll investigate further about other parts rattling.

Thanks

I believe it has something to do with the brake calipers. When I hold the front brake and push down on the forks it makes that weird crunching clacking kind of sound. I realize that it doesn’t make that noise at all if I just bounce up and down on the bars without holding the break in. So I think I can rule out anything to do with the forks. It makes sense my brakes are long overdue for an overhaul.

Hold the front wheel against a concrete wall and push up and down on the front end.I'm relieved for you that it's the front brakes.

Tightened down the front brake caliper bracket and the issue went away. Thanks y’all.
