Magnetic tank bag
« on: August 19, 2020, 06:52:32 PM »
Hope this is the right section for this.

Does anyone have a slim tank magnetic bag they like to use for their phone?  Looking at something like this one...https://www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/burly-voyager-magnetic-tank-screen

I want something just to hold my phone and maybe a battery pack that is clear so I can see gps for longer trips.  My one friend uses a phone holder clamp that goes on the handlebars but I really want something more flat and out of the way.  I'm starting to do longer trips and I can't fit all the directions on a piece of paper that is held down with magnets haha.

Thanks for your suggestions!

I used a similar one on my F1 750. I added a cord to the bike battery charger plug-in to keep it charged and used a set of earphones so I could hear gps when I couldn't or didn't want to see the screen.   I remember thinking I was making good time going to Sturgis until after a gas stop the gps lady said go straight on I90 for 650 miles.  It also has a nylon safety strap with a plastic quick buckle. Mine came off of an end cap display in an auto parts store.

I use something similar. Make sure it’s large enough for your glasses, wallet etc.when we make short stop. I peel mine off and take it with me. Sort of a “man purse”, that ensures I don’t leave any valuables hanging off the bike...... I do usually leave the key in the ignition though!!!

In regards to the GPS wiring... I got a 10000mAh power bank, put that under the seat, and ran a long USB to the handlebars.  Not sure what mount you are using but I got a RAM specific mount for my model.  This power bank only used 10-20% capacity of 100% brightness and 100% volume level during a 4.5 hour trip.  I did this because I didn't want to overload the old electrical system.  Would rather not chance it if it's working just fine.

If you have nice paint, be careful to check for metal filings and other stuff stuck to the magnets before slapping the bag on the tank and sliding it around to get it positioned correctly.
I have a magnetic bag, and it is surprising how much stuff the magnets pick up. I use the bag on my beater, but would be reluctant use on a bike with a nice paint job.

I have very similar one, just to hold the phone and some food, wipes that kind of things.

But my phone overheats under the clear cover and restarts every so often, annoying.

And I charge it from the battery using the battery trickler pigtail.

Thanks everyone you all bring up some good points. I was definitely going to use a tether for safety and was thinking about attaching it to my jacket so I don't walk away from the bike and leave everything sitting there free for the taking!

I have heard about the overheating issue but Don R reminded me I could just use headphones instead of having to see the screen. I don't want the distraction of a screen anyway.  Maybe I will make a leather pouch for the phone to rest in one of the side covers that way it should still get GPS signal and I can just get some long headphones to run to my helmet.  Thought about bluetooth headphones but the wired ones would be great because they will remind me to grab my phone.

Maraakate, which power bank did you use? Thats a great idea I will start looking around for one small enough. I'd hate to put any extra load on the charging system.  I switch to led for the tail light and led for the turn signals (just so they are more visible). I wanted to do a led trucker light but they are so heavy I'd need to upgrade the headlight bucket and that means redoing that birds nest of wires in there.  Plus a quality led headlight that projects properly is not cheap.

Thanks again everyone for the advice and let me know if you have any other ideas. I will post up photos if I try to make the under side cover pouch.

Started looking into the power banks and saw this one which had a solar panel.  I haven't looked into he reviews yet but it gave me an idea if I find a decent one with a solar panel.  I could make a sleeve with a clear window or even large hole netting to reduce heat and improve solar charging and have the sleeve sewn to the back of my jacket.  That way its always charging if it's sunny.  How well they charge by solar who knows but a fun idea.  I could also add a similar sleeve to my pack I sometimes carry so it still sees the sun.  My bike is a cafe bike so I don't have much storage room but still take it on trips rather than short spurt rides.

I use a Rokform magnetic hnadlebar mount for my phone. Probably not what you are looking for but its very handy for GPS (can be paired with a bluetooth com system like the Freedom com -check Ebay/Amazon) and hooks up direct to the battery via a pigtail connector/Apple cable. Phones will not overload any SOHC charging system. Good luck with whatever you choose.

Yea a basic charger uses about 1 amp/5 watts and even the quick chargers only uses about 2 amps/ 12 watts.  That really isn't much, I'm adding a hidden usb charging port to my basic bare bones 30s style hot rod.  I like the idea of the power bank though because I could use it for other stuff too. I'm thinking now with the headphones I may check to see how good gps service is in my jacket pocket.  I still may make the leather pouches under the side covers for tools though.  I'll be sure to make a rubber cover for the top of the battery to cover the terminals and another rubber cover for the electrics on the left side.

I bought this 10000mAh power bank on Amazon for $20 a month or two ago, but it appears to have went down in price a few dollars: https://www.amazon.com/INIU-High-Speed-Flashlight-Powerbank-Compatible/dp/B07CZDXDG8.  It served me well on a 10 hour round trip and I've used it multiple times since then.  Fits easily under the seat.

Yeah, I'm sure it's probably all OK to run a phone charger or even a GPS off the battery or even directly into the wiring system for key on/off but considering these charging systems don't enjoy low RPM and/or sitting in traffic I'd rather not have that be a potential failure point.  Even the cheap power banks can charge a phone 2 or 3 times from 0% and can keep a GPS powered for a ridiculously long time.

Either way, you should be good.

Great I will check that one out. Definitely going the power bank route just for the capability of using it for other things.
