Any opinions on an '84 GS1150?
« on: June 13, 2011, 08:55:37 AM »
Any opinions out there on the Suzuki GS 1150's?

I saw a beautiful looking 1984 GS 1150 the other day, and kind of made me want one. I have three SOHC Honda's right now, two of which are projects (my cb750 and cb400f), while I ride my cb550K almost daily. I like to ride two-up with my wife, and let's face it, the 550 isn't the greatest bike for two-up with the two of us (I know, I'll probably hear stories of people who have travelled across the country with a fully loaded 350/4 with two people, but at the end of the day, it still isn't overly comfortable).

I know of one for sale, and I'm pretty sure I could sell my '78 550K for about the purchase price of the GS 1150. Am I crazy for thinking of getting rid of my Honda for the Suzuki??

Are these bikes as reliable as our SOHC4 honda's??

In spades!

The big GS's are among the finest bikes going, IMO.  Absolutely over-engineered!  Stong, fast, comfortable and very reliable exept for a gimpy stator / rectifier design which is easily remedied.  And even then, that mostly applies to the earlier models.  I think that by 84 or 85 they were straightened out.

Go for it and you won't look back!

Thanks Kirk. Good to know! Power output is WAY higher than my 550, so it shouldn't have any problem's hauling myself and my wife around! Even the 550 has enough power to get us both around okay, but the seat is a little small, and the braking really feels compromised with additional weight on the bike.

Are they simple enough to work on as well? I know they are carbed, air-cooled 4 cylinders like our Honda's...but I think they're 4 valve per cylinder heads..?

Anyway, looks like an interesting bike...I appreciate the input!

Yes they are 16-valve motors, but (IIRC), they're screw-and-locknut adjusters, so no worries there.  My '85 GS700E is screw-and-locknut, and I think the 1100/1150s were too by then.

Bottom line is, the 1150 was Suzuki's flagship in those years.  And all that that implies....

Good luck and be sure to post up some pix, if you get it.

Beautiful bike! I've been sitting here all afternoon contemplating putting my 550 up for sale...It's my first bike though, and have a bit of an attachment to it already even though I've only owned it for a year...

How is the handling/braking on your GS1100?

my 750 handles a bit better I think. But the GS is more comfy and faster ;D

It's apples and oranges comparing a 550 to a 1150.

They are great bikes. Perfect for touring (which is what mine is for, mostly).

Do you know what model it is? E, ES, ESE, G? The 'G' bikes are shaft drive. All the 'E' bikes are chain & sprocket. The ESE had a smaller front wheel, they are reported to be a little twitchy (but I can't personally confirm that).

My '82 ES is a beast; faster than I want to go, handles like #$%* compared to my CB500, (but I don't do a lot of canyon carving with it, so it's a non-issue.) and it's a heavy pig (500# w/ full tank) but with 100+hp the weight is really not an issue.
I wish it got better mileage and had a 6th gear, but other than that it is pretty much perfect.

Don't worry about the motor, it's the Chevy 350 of the motorcycle world. What it lacks in high-tech design, it makes up for in raw power. I believe the GS 1000 series motors are still used in drag racing.

I looked at some pics, and from what I can gather, it's not an '84, but an '85 gs1150ef, minus the fairing.

I want a bike I can fly down the highway with, with my wife on the back. Currently, that's a little uncomfortable on the cb550...

I know the insurance will be more, which is holding me back a little....I'm guessing it'll be around $2000 annually... :o

No antique plates in the Province of Manitoba my friend....we get beat up here on bike insurance. My 550K is $1400 annually. My wife's 400f will be just a hair over $1000...

Love paying more in annual insurance than what my bike is actually worth!!

My neighbor down the back lane with the 2011 103 cubic inch Harley pays $1400 as well....go figure.

I  have had a few GS1100E's ; 1982' & 83'. The 83' I really went Hog wild and really did the motor up. I wanted it to be my extreme power monster & I was very power
hungry at that time. It sure fulfilled that goal ! I have many years of experience w/ that
Big Suz. and I may be able to help you out if you do make the purchase.

The biggest problem when you move up to the Big block inline four (at least it was for me) is that I love to hear the engine sing. That's ok if it's a CB350/400F or even
a CB500/550; BUT when you hop onto the Suzuki GS1150E.....Well...all I will say is
look out for those hidden "blue light specials" ! ! I've had my share ! The thing I enjoy
now when I ride my (comparatively sedate 72' CB350K4) is that I can hear the engine spin if I like and still be able to turn it down in time to keep my license. Im hoping to keep it more in "touring mode" & enjoy the "scene"; you know ? !

Happy trails ALL & enjoy this great Season !
75' CB400F/'bunch o' parts' & 81' CB125S modded to a 'CB200S'
I love the small ones too !
Do your BEST...nobody can take that away from you.

Hi,

I know this is an old thread, but I can’t help but answering anyway.

I’ve had this bike since April 1988; I fell in love with it instantly when it hit the Danish market pretty late before it was discontinued.
Heck, I hadn’t even tried the bike when I picked it up at the dealer, but I was never in doubt I had to own this baby (the very last they had at the dealer, by the way).

Now 32 years have passed, so we know each other pretty well by now. It does have a few flaws as has been mentioned here, such as the generator/rectifier issues.
I haven’t had much trouble with my stators though; it’s mainly the rectifiers which, as with many other bikes, are prone to failure. It was replaced recently with a cheap Shindengen copy from China, and this one has proven quite stable - it seems durable and keeps my voltage at around 14.2-14.3V at all times, even at idle.

It’s also true it’s a relatively heavy bike, but I think it handles reasonably well. It’s ideal for sport touring, perhaps even with passenger, and the engine never fail to impress. During the last many years I’ve been as far away as Baku, Volgograd (Stalingrad), Tbilisi, Yerevan (Armenia), etc. (done some extensive touring in the former Soviet Union), so I decided to lower my engine rpm. for cruising. +1 tooth front and -2 teeth rear, and the engine behaves as if it really doesn’t care - the torque it delivers is such a delight, even with this gearing.

Except for the usual issues with wear - cables, starter engine failure a single time, a worn stator, etc, the bike and especially the engine handles everything it is asked for, year after year. As mentioned I’ve had it for 32 years and even today I’m still impressed with the quality and endurance Suzuki managed to put into this bike.
I believe you’ll never regret buying this model; I haven’t - I’m still in love with it! :-D
