OK Sam, I've weighed all the pro's and con's and have come to the decision that my 550 motor is coming out for a freshen up, and I reckon while it's out it may as well get a bit of tweaking & fettling

As you've been in this particular game for far longer than me, (I only bought my CB 6 months ago), and as a result probably know better than I do what to do, and more importantly who to get it done by.

So who in our area would you recommend I get the work done by?

Well Mr Duck, now you're asking, I don't know anyone near to you Chris.
There is a place in Warrington that did our boreing and lightened and ballanced the crank.
They do head work but we got ours done in Lincolnshire and they have moved to Ireland.
For what he charges, you could send it to Mike in the States, that way you know you will get a top notch job.
Plenty guys on here from all over the world will vouch for Mikes work. We would have used him ourselves if we could have forseen the problems we experienced over here.

To be honest Sam, after reading both his own posts, and the glowing references from everybody on here else who's dealt with him, Mr Rieck was my immediate first thought, but I assumed the distances involved would be too great a problem/cost

Maybe I need to speak to Mike directly, and look more closely at the logistics side of things I have no doubt that I would get a top notch ready to roll engine back   Most probably well before there was a re-assembled bike ready to receive it, knowing my own work rate as I do


BTW. I'm home for ten days at the end of May, no doubt you'll be taking me up on that offer I made a while back of a drink or two God knows I'll ned it, you can't get decent beer over here for love nor money

Mike has sent heads to Europe so should be able to give you a price.

I'm OK with dismantling and rebuilding chemical plants, and agricultural stuff like my old Ford, but I'm all thumbs when it comes to anything this dinky


Thinking about it, I might try Mick Puffets approach and acquire a second motor to practice on. Though I might not go to the extent of seizing it before I take it apart

Instead of sending your head, buy one on ebay in the states and get them to send it direct to Mike, preferably with the inlet stubs.

The 550 is an easy engine to work on and most work needs no special tools at all just care and good cleaning

But how would I know I was getting a/ the right head for my bike and, b/ a decent straight one?

I'd be more than happy to help you out Chris. Shipping a head air mail to europe is about 90.00 to 100.00. Bryan's idea is a sound one as I'm sure you could find a 500/550 head for less money. To bad it wasn't a 750 as I have a few spares.

Is that $90 to $100 US? It used to cost us over twice that to airmail things of a similar size/weight from europe to the US


I don't suppose you're any where near Boston are you? Somebody on another thread has got a whole 550F motor going free to anyone who'll collect


As Sam will confirm, me and my CB are not exactly in close proximity at the moment, so when I get back to the UK I'll get in touch and we can work something out.

What would you recommend with regard to the bottom end, as far as a rebore/overbore/other goes?

I'll check my ol' bin of parts - I might have a 550 head that you can have.  I'm in Toronto, so would need to ship to the US for the work.

I rebuilt my engine myself (550F) this past fall for the first time.  Was no problem.  I had my head worked on (just a valve job) and cylinders bored by a machine shop, but did all the wrenching myself.  Took me a couple of hours to break the engine down and get the pistons off the rods.  Putting it back together took probably 4-8 hours total, including remounting carbs, hooking cables back up and what-not.

If you're just doing the top-end, go for it!

Chris, if you keep it simple and just do the work in the head, you won't have to worry about reliability.

You can get your cam re ground at Megacycle for not a lot, I think they do one that gives good mid range and top end.

I think it is their 126-01 cam, you can run stock pistons and valves.
