downunder this is a 78 supersport, what do y'all call it?

It doesn't have a lot in common with your later supersports. Maybe it just sat in a dealer's showroom a long time but I wonder if it has older wheels fitted. I keep reading the late F motors are all different internals with problem heads. Don't want one of them!

Yup, starting in 77, the F's all had comstar mags.  It's possible, and I don't know, that there may have been a half-year model with the older wheels.  Anybody know?  Or maybe it was an Aussie thing.

Didn't the U.S. 77-78s have black motors?

That looks to be what would have been a '75F or '76F1 in the US going by the motor, exhaust, wheels, brakes and color. I'm not sure which year that color was here.

They sure did!

I think Mike is right, that looks to be what was a '76 F bike here in the states.  Here, at least, that was the only year that color was available on a cb750f with that striping.

It is a 76F - it came out with the spoked wheels and first with rear disc brake - I thought the original colours were Sunrise Orange - but no guarantees..

It is not an F2 as they had different brakes, different swingarm, and comstars..

where you located and is that bike yours ???

It could also be a clone. Not really hard to do.

I think it is a clone. It does not have the 77 - 78 coffin top pumper carbs from what I can see. Looks like old school round tops.

Gidday Zoomer - is that the one on trade me with the cam chain rattle?  It maybe it just has supersport side panel, if you get the engine number you can check it at hondachoppers.com  I bought my F supersport and didn't realise the F heads were an issue - luckily mine has a K3 engine for some reason.  You in Auckland?

Certainly seems to be the one on TradeMe:
http://www.trademe.co.nz/Trade-Me-Motors/Motorbikes/Motorbikes/Classic-vintage/auction-87435646.htm

Looks to be a '76 - Candy Antares Red was one of the two colours available for that model year - and in very good original condition too I might add, by the looks of it.

More than likely was imported to NZ in '78, and that is what is stated on the rego papers... my 550 is the same - engine and frame numbers say it is a '74, the rego says it's a '78 - when it was first registered here i guess...

Useful info on frame/engine numbers can be had here on this very site:

In the states that would be a 76 750F1. The 76 was identical to the 75 except for colors. The 75 was Candy Sapphire Blue or Flake Sunrise Orange. The 76 was this color Candy Antares Red Special or Sulfur Yellow. I saw a picture someone posted recently of what was labeled a 77F1 in England I believe that was this color but had an earlier K front fender (2 supports instead of 1) and had the K style smaller turn signals. Wasn't Honda somewhat notorious for retagging unsold bikes as the next year's model?

What are your serial numbers? The 75 engine started with CB750E 2500004 and went to 25115085. The frame was 750F1000002 and went to 1015054. The 76 frame was 750F2000003 and went to 2022317 with the engine numbers of CB750E 2525094 to 2563530 . They don't explain the discrepancy of 6000 more engines than frames?! I have heard there are engines that are 750GE-------- that was said to stand for GeneralExport. My 75 750F is 750F1001606 . This info is directly from the Honda parts catalogue.

The head issue is with the 77/78 F2/F3 that had the black engine.

Also, the carburettors and rear brake are from a 75-76 F. So it should be a F.

Looks pretty much like my 1976 CB750F1, here's a photo of it when I bought it in 76 (UK).

both my F1's have the 2 stays on the front mudguard and the smaller indicators & 1 is a 1976 & the other is a 1978 , i'm guessing this 78 one sat in the showroom because the F2's were out by then :-\  ;)   mick.

Dragged a few Kiwis out of the woodwork with that one.  ;D Thanks one and all. Seems pretty well agreed to be an F1 whatever year it was registered.

Trying not to get too excited about another project right now but feeling very close to a familiar vortex. Damn Carpy.

It's just down the road from me,  I'm going to 'Vegas anyway so wouldn't hurt to check it out. Looks like he wants 2K for it. Too much? Kiwi dollars that is. From the photos it is either well preserved or had previous restoration. The headers haven't got much chrome on the first 8". Any Kiwis been down the strip and rechrome/recoat (HPC?) route?

Spitfire and Mc's pictures show the differences between F1 models from UK and the states. Notice the front fender with the 2 braces (?) like the K models utilize vs the single one on a states model. The turn signals are also the older style. Thanks for posting the pictures guys.

No, but need that done to my headers. I'd be interested in an answer to that question also!  :)

Theres another F with wire wheels on trade me, I'm bidding half heartedly on it as well, got some nice mods, drilled disks performance ignition velocity stacks and some other nice bits - buy it before I spend more than I want too!

Here in the states, that is a 76 Supersport.  Maybe it was already 1978 when the model reached your distant shores, and hell, you wouldn't know the difference!

The guy says 3000 for a new recon so I figure you might have a few bids to go but if you figure in the cost of getting hold of the tasty bits maybe it's worth it. At least it's running smooth, you don't see ones like that for sale unless they're 8G's. Too far away for me.
Those ugly great indicators can only be "all the better to be seen by you", at least they picked out the right front fender for us.

I'm sending off some pistons to HPC today so I'll ask them about the exhaust treatment.

EDIT.
Seems the price depends on how long it takes in the chrome stripping tank
I did a bit of searching and two members have owned up to doing it. 1 for and 1 against
