My Birthday Present
« on: July 27, 2020, 10:57:04 AM »
I will be 71 years of age on the last day of this month and this was dropped off in my driveway this past Saturday as an early birthday present to myself.  I am pretty sure my Wife of 33 years is looking at old age homes for me behind my back since she saw the bike.  The motor is a 77 with a big bore kit and Dyna EI installed.  Looking the bike over it is a dichotomy of good and bad, for example, the front end has forking is by Frank, yet the bottom of the electrical box is a piece of tin held with a zip tie.  I am going to give it a good cleaning, oil change, valve adjustment, and tune before even thinking about putting it on the road.  Of course it has had a couple short outings just to test performance, it is feisty and runs really well but since I am 6'4'' I do somewhat resemble a large monkey riding a football with no forward controls installed.  Will I keep it, time and the condition of my back will tell.

Happy birthday!  I'm right behind you in age.  Who's counting anyway at this point?  Do the things you enjoy and keep the riding time going!  Only"so many times  around the sun" as they say.  I told my wife she can buy all the art supplies she needs as long as I keep buying all the spares I need to keep my CB going:)

Happy Birthday,  and I gotta say that bike is very nice,.
Myself I would put a front brake on it..
I would really think about forward controls, many of them just don't look very good, hi way pegs are better looking.
I have found I can ride very long miles on a rigid with mid pegs,  but I lift my butt slightly for bridge joints and potholes. Saves your back.,

Nice bike!
I saw many like this one here in the 70's.
CB750 engine look really good in a chopper frame.
I saw several with plenty of chrome and gold plated parts.

Happy Birthday and congrats on the sweet ride.  Very clean looks and whoever put it together did a nice job.

Odd how things change.  Back in the mid '70's a chopped 750 was all the rage and it seems like every other one you saw was chopped to some degree.  Ninja, café was almost nonexistent from what I remember.  Today's bikes are all café style and to be honest I don't think my back would last more than 20 min in that riding position.

Wishing you many fun miles!

-P.

About brakes, choppers with a wider rake have not much use of a front brake as I have heard. Minimum weight on wheel that will bounce, less braking when using front brake.

I got that explanation when looking for rear hub. Chopper hubs brake liner usually more worn.

This bike however seems to have use for one. Adding a slim disc and caliper etc.

I hope you will enjoy your birthday present!

Yeah , thats right pewe....not much weight transfer with a rigid rear suspension, and with long thin forks, grabbing a big handful with a big front brake can make you wish you hadnt.  Of course, it is to be a more relaxed ride...no tailgating and just get on the gas when you have lots of room
If it works good, it looks good...
