Static Electricity Shock
« on: July 05, 2020, 03:02:34 PM »
So I’ve been troubleshooting this problem for a while now with no luck. I recently installed some new ignition coils to fix my coils that were overheating. That problem got solved but now I’m getting shocked every time I start my motorcycle. It’s on for about ten seconds before I have to hurriedly shut it off so I stop getting shocked. I understand what’s happening, that the bike is using me as the ground but I’ve checked the wiring up and down and tightened everything really good and it is still happening. I’m thinking it’s something to do with the new ignition coils. As I’m new to motorcycles and did my best to install them properly but am not sure. Bike starts and runs great. No backfiring, starts right up, idles good. Throttle response is good. I’ll attach some photos of the ignition coils for reference. Any help is welcome.

I'd think it would be your coils too since that's the last thing you touched. But it also wouldn't be a bad idea to make sure that you don't have any of the 3 yellow wires pinched on the shifter side cover. 12v dc won't shock you that bad so the voltage is coming from your coils or stator.

What part of the bike is even shocking you?

Plug wires maybe? Start your bike late at night away from any lights and watch for an electric light show. If your wires are old, they can easily short through the insulation. You'll be able to see if it's dark and you look carefully.

This might be able to shock you through the handlebars  : power wire to coils from r/h control/kill switch, pinched or shorted in the r/h handlebar switchgear cases.

Combined with :  no real earth connection from the switchgear to handlebars, or triple tree, to frame earth/neg battery..

The earthed headlamp mount nuts in the headlight shell are to earth the triple tree properly. ( Instead of using clutch cable or bearings for earth connection.)

Combined with :  no or dead points Capacitors. (What do electronic ignitions do with that spike? Suck it up or not make it?)

If none of those? Don't know..
