Rear shocks from 76F on 78K
« on: February 14, 2007, 09:14:20 AM »
Will it work without modification. My right rear shock spring is broken and I need a replacement. I can get a shock off of a 76F but I want to make sure that it will work. I would compare them but the replacement shock is 500 miles away.

I did a search and didn't find the answer. Any information would be appreciated.

There are probably some minor variations in dampning, spring rate and length but for sure, the 76F shocks will fit and work OK on your 78.  However you would want to replace both shocks not just one. All in all you might be better off getting a new set from Progressive or perhaps some of the new ones listed on Ebay.  Stock shocks weren't all that good and after 30 years probably could use a rebuild.

Thanks for the reply. My main concern right now is getting the bike to pass the inspection here in Virginia. I have two 76F models in Kentucky that my father has stored in his garage. The shocks look like crap and probably work like crap. The only thing that I will be out of pocket is the cost for shipping. I already had the shocks on my list for replacement but I just don't have the cash right now. That has to go toward a new front tire, carb rebuild kits and a new throttle cable. Until then I gotta go with the cheapest route:)

Thanks again for your help.

Shocks are identical. Same part number 52400-392-003. Verified at Service Honda microfiche. Where do you have F's stashed in KY??

Right now they are in Paintsville which is on the eastern side of the state.

I am hoping that I can move them here by the summer but I really don't have much use for them or much room for that matter. They are pretty beat up and not what I would consider great for restoration. The previous owner left them in a garage for years. The titles have been lost and so have the keys. One set of carbs are missing and the other set is not installed. One engine is locked up. Both seats are trashed, side covers missing, wheels are piles of rust, tires are nothing but rot, exhaust is all but gone and the tanks are junk.

Some guy that my father knows had them and was going to take them in for scrape. He offered to sell them and his description of the bikes made them sound like a steal. He also said they where K models. My dad payed for them without looking at them and had the guy drop them off. Well, needless to say, they are nothing like he described. At least there are some parts that I can salvage.

At least the bikes are somewhat close to you considering Paintsville. Looks like an EBay parts goldmine.

MJ Honda,

In Virginia-don't worry abou the inspection.
Just go with an antique plate--- 14 bucks--good forever--no inspection.
